Efficacy of Some Plant Extracts on Frankliniella occidentalis Pergande (Thysanoptera: Thripidae)

The study aimed to determine the lethal effects of different plant extracts on adult females of Frankliniella occidentalis Pergande (Thysanoptera: Thripidae). 1%, 6%, and 12% concentrations of thyme (Origanum onites L.) (Lamiaceae), basil (Ocimum basilicum L.) (Lamiaceae), and pennyroyal (Mentha pulegium L.) (Lamiaceae) plant extracts were used. Each concentration of these plant extracts was applied to kidney bean leaves using the dipped method for 5 seconds, prepared according to the leaf disk method. Fifteen minutes after dipping the leaf discs, ten adult female F. occidentalis individuals were transferred to each petri dish using a brush. A mixture of sterile distilled water and 0.3% Tween 20 was used in the control application. Observations were made at 24-hour intervals for 5 days after the application. The study was conducted in plastic petri dishes (9 cm) using a randomized plot design with five replicates. According to the results obtained from the study, 24-120 hours after application, the corrected mortality rates were between 14-49% at a 1% thyme extract concentration. In basil and pennyroyal extracts, these mortality rates were determined as 6-35% and 0-16%, respectively. The corrected mortality rates were 14-49% at the 6% thyme extract concentration, while they were 12-43% and 4-33% in basil and pennyroyal extracts. The highest corrected mortality rates were observed at 24, 48, 72, 96, and 120 hours after application of the 12% concentration of thyme extract (28, 48, 58, 66, and 72%), followed by basil (20, 38, 49, 58, and 68%) and pennyroyal (10, 28, 35, 43, and 45%) at the same concentration.
