Evaluation of the Effect of Display of Dental Plaque on Oral and Dental Health Behaviors of University Students

Abstract

Aim: The aim of this study is to determine the oral and dental health behaviors of the students studying in different faculties of Akdeniz University, and to reveal the differences in oral and dental health behaviors, and to examine the changes in their thoughts after showing the teeth with plaque disclosing agent. Method: In the first part of the questionnaire directed to the students who accepted to participate in the study, there were 18 questions to collect information about oral and dental health habits, followed by the Hiroshima University Dental Behavior Inventory (HU-DBI) questions. The student, who was shown the presence of plaque and given oral hygiene training, had the last part of the questionnaire consisting of 6 questions filled in to determine the change in his/her thoughts. Results: A total of 635 university students from 19 different faculties, aged between 18-40 (mean: 21.4±2.6), 268 women (42.2%) and 367 men (57.8%) participated in our study. As a result of the analysis, when oral and dental health behaviors among the faculties were compared, statistically significant (p<0.001) results were found. (Mean HU-DBI Scores: Faculty of Communication=4.27, Faculty of Sports Sciences=5.17, Faculty of Theology= 5.25, Faculty of Dentistry=6.56, Faculty of Agriculture=6.56). On the score values calculated from the answers given to the HU-DBI questions, the effect of gender (p=0.130), mother's education level (p=0.653), father's education level (p=0.678), mother's occupation (p=0.198) and father's occupation (p=0.227) was determined to have no statistically significant. After plaque disclosing, up to 93.5% of students reported that the oral hygiene education given caused positive changes in their thoughts on oral and dental health. Conclusion: Our study showed that in order to develop positive oral health behaviors in university students, content supporting oral and dental health should be included in the curriculum of all departments at the university during university education.

Diş Plağının Gösterilmesinin Üniversite Öğrencilerinin Ağız Diş Sağlığına Yönelik Tutum ve Davranışlarına Olan Etkisinin Değerlendirilmesi

Öz

Amaç: Bu çalışmanın amacı Akdeniz Üniversitesi’nin farklı fakültelerinde okuyan üniversite öğrencilerinin ağız diş sağlığı davranış ve düşüncelerinin tespit edilmesi, ağız ve diş sağlığı davranış ve düşüncelerindeki farklıkların ortaya konması ve dişlerinin plak boyası ile öğrenciye gösterilmesinin ardından düşüncelerindeki değişimin incelenmesidir. Yöntem: Çalışmaya katılmayı kabul eden öğrencilere yöneltilen anketin birinci bölümünde, ağız diş sağlığı alışkanlıkları hakkında bilgi toplamak için 18 adet soru ve ardından Hiroşima Üniversitesi Diş Davranış Envanteri “Hiroshima University Dental Behaviour Inventory” (HU-DBI) soruları yer almıştır. Plak mevcudiyeti gösterilen ve ağız hijyeni eğitimi verilen öğrenciye, düşüncelerinde değişikliği belirlemek için anketin 6 soruluk son bölümü doldurulmuştur. Bulgular: Çalışmamıza, 19 ayrı fakülteden yaşları 18-40 yaş arası değişen (Ort.:21,4±2,6) 268 kadın (%42,2), 367 erkek (%57,8) toplam 635 üniversite öğrencisi katılmıştır. Yapılan analizler sonucunda fakülteler arasında ağız diş sağlığı davranışları kıyaslandığında istatistiksel olarak ileri derecede anlamlı (p<0,001) farklılıklar bulunmuştur (HU-DBI skorları: İletişim Fakültesi=Ort.:4,27, Spor Bilimleri Fakültesi=Ort.:5,17, İlahiyat Fakültesi=Ort.: 5,25, Diş Hekimliği Fakültesi= Ort.: 6,56, Ziraat Fakültesi= Ort.: 6,56). HU-DBI sorularına verilen cevaplardan hesaplanan skor değerleri üzerinde, cinsiyetin (p=0,130), anne eğitim durumunun (p=0,653), baba eğitim durumunun (p=0,678), anne mesleğinin (p=0,198) ve baba mesleğinin (p=0,227) istatistiksel olarak herhangi bir anlamlı etkisinin olmadığı belirlenmiştir. Plak boyamasını takiben öğrenciler %93,5’e varan oranlarda, verilen ağız hijyeni eğitiminin ağız diş sağlığı görüş ve düşüncelerinde olumlu yönde değişikliklere neden olduğunu bildirmişlerdir. Sonuç: Çalışmamız, üniversite öğrencilerinde olumlu ağız diş sağlığı davranışlarını geliştirmek için üniversite öğrenimi süresince üniversitedeki tüm bölümlerin müfredatına ağız diş sağlığını geliştirmeyi destekleyen içeriklerin yerleştirilmesi gerektiğini göstermiştir.
