THE CONTRIBUTION OF FRANZ LISZT’S "MAZEPPA" TRANSCENDENTAL ETUDE TO PIANO EDUCATION FROM AN ARTISTIC AND TECHNICAL PERSPECTIVE

Abstract

Franz Liszt’s Transcendental Etudes have long been part of the repertoire of pianists around the world. The majority these concert etudes are programmatic, and they each have their own story. The Mazeppa Etude from this series is one of the most popular pieces, but it is also known for its technical difficulties. The aim of the study is to investigate the contribution of this etude to piano pedagogy, from the position of developing students; technical and artistic aspects, as well as possible suggestions necessary for performance. The object of the study is “Twelve Transcendental Etudes” by Liszt. The etude Mazeppa was chosen as a sample. The study used the method of qualitative research. A content analysis of the etude was carried out on the basis of sheet music material from the publisher “Breitkopf & Hartel”. A literature review was also conducted and descriptive research technique was used. The technical difficulties found in the piece were analysed, as well as their solutions proposed by the composer and the publisher. In order to analyse the artistic aspect of the work, the form was analysed and an original story from Victor Hugo’s work, which forms the programme of the etude, was found. Parts of the sketch that correspond to the details of the story's plot were identified, and suggestions were given for the artistic execution of these parts. Based on the technical and artistic suggestions provided in the research, the aim was to create a resource that could assist educators and students in the transcription phase of a piece. The etude Mazeppa is suitable for undergraduate and graduate programmes due to its technical difficulties and numerous variants of artistic interpretation.

FRANZ LISZT’İN "MAZEPPA" TRANSANDANTAL ETÜDÜNÜN PİYANO EĞİTİMİNE SANATSAL VE TEKNİK YÖNDEN KATKISI

Abstract

Romantik Dönemin en önemli bestecilerinden Franz Liszt’in Transandantal Etütleri dünya piyanistlerinin repertuvarında geniş yer almaktadır. Bu etütlerin büyük çoğunluğu Programlı Konser Etütleri olarak birer hikayeye sahiptir. Bu serinin içinde yer alan Mazeppa etüdü sevilen bir sanat eseri olmakla beraber teknik açıdan içerdiği zorluklar ile de ünlüdür. Araştırmanın amacını bu etüdün piyano eğitiminde teknik ve sanatsal yönlerden öğrencilere sağladığı katkının incelenmesi ve bu anlamda önerilerde bulunulması oluşturmaktadır. Araştırmanın evrenini F. Liszt’in “On iki Transandantal Etüdü” oluşturmaktadır. Örneklem olarak Mazeppa etüdü seçilmiştir. Nitel araştırma yöntemlerinden faydalanılan araştırmada Breitkopf & Hartel yayınevi nota baskısı üzerinden etüdün yapısal ve sanatsal analizi yapılmıştır. Ayrıca literatür taraması yapılarak betimsel araştırma tekniğinden yararlanılmıştır. Eserde bulunan teknik zorluklar incelenmiş, bestecinin ve yayınevinin notalarda önerdiği çözümlerle beraber zorlukların aşılması için alternatif seçenekler sunulmuştur. Eserin sanatsal boyutunu incelemek için form analizi yapılmış ve etüdün programını teşkil eden Victor Hugo’nun orijinal hikayesine ulaşılmıştır. Hikayenin detaylarına etüdün hangi kısımları ile karşılık verildiği saptanmış ve bu kısımlara sanatsal yorum önerileri verilmiştir. Araştırmada verilen teknik ve sanatsal önerilerle eğitimci ve öğrencilere eserin deşifre aşamasında yardımcı olabilecek kaynak oluşturulması amaçlanmıştır. Mazeppa etüdü içerdiği sanatsal yorum seçenekleri ve teknik zorluklar sebebiyle lisans ve lisans üstü programları öğrencileri için uygun bulunmuştur.
