Çocuk Dergilerinde Bilimin Doğası ve Bilim İnsanları: Bilim Çocuk Dergisi Örneği

Öz

Fen eğitiminin temel amaçlarından olan fen okuryazarı bireyler yetiştirebilmek için bilimin nasıl işlediğinin iyi kavranması gereklidir. Bilimin doğası fen dersi içerisinde kazandırılmaya çalışılan bir kazanım olsa da bilimin doğası ve bilim insanı ile ilgili anlayışların oluşmasında formal eğitim dışında birçok kaynak etkili olmaktadır. Bu kaynaklar içinde yazılı kitle iletişim araçlarından olan dergiler önemli bir yere sahiptir ve içeriklerinde bilimin ve bilim insanının nasıl sunulduğu oldukça önemlidir. Bu çalışmada önemli bir informal öğrenme kaynağı olan ve TÜBİTAK tarafından yayınlanan Bilim Çocuk dergisinin “Simit ve Peynir’le Bilim İnsanı Öyküleri” adlı çizgi öykülerde yer verilen bilimin doğası bileşenlerinin ve bilim insanının özelliklerinin tespit edilmesi amaçlanmıştır. Araştırmada, nitel araştırma yöntemlerinden doküman analizi kullanılmıştır. 2007-2020 yılları arasındaki sayılarda yer alan 168 çizgi öykü içerik analizi ile analiz edilmiştir. Analizlerde araştırmacılar tarafından hazırlanan “Bilimin Doğası Bileşenleri Kontrol Listesi” ve “Bilim İnsanı Özellikleri Kontrol Listesi” kullanılmıştır. Yapılan incelemelerde, çizgi öykülerde bilimin doğası ve bilim insanı ile ilgili birçok özelliğe değinildiği tespit edilmiştir. Bilimin doğası ile ilgili olarak en sık değinilen bileşenlerin, “bilimsel bilginin kanıta dayalı olduğu”, bilimsel çalışmalarda gözlemin önemli olduğu”, “bilimsel bilginin, gözlemlerin ve çıkarımların birleşimini içerdiği”; en az değinilen bileşenlerin ise “bilimsel çalışmalar, içinde bulunduğu toplumun politik, sosyal ve kültürel yapısından etkilendiği”, “bilimsel bilgi değişebildiği”nin olduğu görülmüştür. Bilim insanları ile ilgili olarak en çok “meraklı” ve “iyi bir gözlemci” olmalarına değinildiği, en az ise “hayal gücüne sahip olma”nın vurgulandığı belirlenmiştir. Bilim Çocuk dergisinde yer alan çizgi anlatımların, bilimin doğası ve bilim insanı ile ilgili uygun bilgi ve düşünceler oluşturma konusunda iyi bir araç olacağı söylenebilir.

The Nature Of Science And Scientists In Children's Magazines: The Example Of Bilim Çocuk (Science Child) Magazine

Abstract

The main purpose of science education is to cultivate scientifically literate individuals, and to achieve this, it is essential to have a good understanding of how science works. Although the nature of science is intended to be taught within science courses, the formation of an understanding of the nature of science and the scientist is influenced by many sources beyond formal education. Among these sources, journals and magazines, particularly those of written mass media, have a significant role, and how science and scientists are presented in their content is crucial. This study aims to identify the components of the nature of science and the characteristics of scientists presented in the comic stories titled "Scientist Stories with Simit and Peynir" from the magazine "Bilim Çocuk" (Science Child), which is an important informal learning source and published by TÜBİTAK (The Scientific and Technological Research Council of Turkey). In the study, document analysis, one of the qualitative research methods, was used. 168 cartoons were analyzed in the issues of the journal between the years 2007 and 2020. In the analysis, the "Nature of Science Elements Checklist" and "Scientist Characteristics Checklist" prepared by the researchers were used. In the study, it was determined that many features related to the nature of science and characteristics of scientists were mentioned in the cartoons. The most commonly mentioned elements regarding the nature of science were "scientific knowledge based on evidence", “importance of the observation in scientific studies”, “scientific knowledge as a combination of observations, and inferences." The least mentioned elements were "scientific studies are influenced by the political, social and cultural structure of the society", and "scientific knowledge is tentative". Regarding the characteristics of scientists, it was determined that being "curious" and "good observer" were the elements mentioned the most, and "having imagination" was the least emphasized one. It could be said that the cartoon narratives in the journal are good tools for creating an accurate knowledge and thoughts about the nature of science and image of the scientists.
