The Effect of Reading Comprehension Strategy Instruction On Reading Comprehension Achievement Of 7th Grade Students’

Abstract

In this research, the effect of reading comprehension strategies such as predicting, questioning, summarizing, clarification, visualising, making connections, and what I know, what I want to know, what I learned (K-W-L) strategies on students’ reading comprehension achievement were investigated. The research was held in Hızır Reis Secondary School. Pre-test post-test control group design was used accordingly; in total of 69 students. The class 7-B was the experiment (n=36), class 7-C (n=33) was the control group. For the assessment of comprehension achievement, the scale “Comprehension Scale For Expository Tests” which was developed by Temizkan (2007), was applied at the beginning and at the end of an 8 weeks process. In order to analyze data t- test and covariance analysis (ANCOVA) were applied. The result of the study showed that, comprehension strategy instruction has no effect on students’ reading comprehension achievement. Another finding of the study is that the comprehension strategy instruction does not show meaningful differenciation on students’ reading comprehension achievement due to gender
