Abstract
Elections to determine the 46th president of the United States were held on November 3, 2020. According to the election result, Democratic Party candidate Joe Biden won the election, while Republican Party candidate Donald John Trump lost. Following confirmation of the election results, Trump called on his supporters to take action on January 6, 2021. On January 6, 2021, Trump supporters gathered in front of the U.S. congressional building, breaking through a police barricade and entering the congressional building, causing a presidential vote to not be held. During this attempt, 5 people were killed and 14 were injured. Trump supporters have called for an end to their actions after Trump called on them to “stand down.” In this study, the presentation of the US Congress building raid in the Turkish written press was analyzed. News published in Cumhuriyet, Hürriyet and Sabah newspapers selected to represent the written press were scanned by content/data scanning technique; the headlines of three news selected from all three newspapers by random sample determination technique were analyzed by semiotic analysis method. As a result of the analysis, it was examined how all three newspapers reported the raid on the US Congressional building and moved it to news headlines. When the news headlines were examined, Cumhuriyet newspaper never used the words “raid”, “crisis” and” occupation“, while Hurriyet newspaper included more sensational words such as” printing“,” crisis“,” chaos“,” rise“,” weapon " in its headlines. In the news headlines of the Sabah newspaper, it was determined that he preferred words such as” bloody raid“,” kill“,” bullet". In addition, Cumhuriyet and Hürriyet newspapers presented one title as a question sentence.
