The Economic Role of Geographically Indicated Products in Rural Development: The Case of Bitlis

Abstract

The aim of this study is to determine the current status of geographical indications belonging to the Bitlis region and to examine the economic impact of these products on rural development in the region. A qualitative research method was preferred in the study. In accordance with purposive sampling techniques, interviews with local stakeholders in the region were supported by document reviews. The data obtained from the interviews were interpreted using content analysis. The geographically registered gastronomic products of the Bitlis region are "Bitlis honey, Büryan kebab, Liver tablama, Katıklı dolma, Çorti tablama, Avşor soup and İçli köfte." It is observed that the GI product registrations in Bitlis are predominantly in the gastronomy sector. These products play an important economic role in rural development in the region. Therefore, in terms of creating economic added value for rural development, it is suggested to relevant stakeholders that emphasis be placed on international marketing activities, national promotional activities be intensified, and e-marketing methods be evaluated.
