Investigation of University Students' Leisure Attitudes

Abstract

The purpose of this study is to investigate the leisure time attitude of Ondokuz Mayıs University students. This study consists of 400 students who study in the faculties of sport, health, economics and management and theology and participate voluntarily in the study. In order to determine students' leisure time attitudes, the "Leisure Attitude Scale" developed by Ragheb and Beard (1982) and adapted into Turkish by Akgül and Gürbüz (2011) was used. No significant difference was found in the affective, cognitive and behavioral sub-dimensions of university students' leisure time attitudes according to computer game playing and gender (p>0.05). No significant difference was found in the affective and cognitive sub-dimensions of students' leisure attitude levels according to income (p>0.05). However, a significant difference was found in the behavioral sub-dimension (p<0.05). A significant difference was found in the affective, cognitive and behavioral sub-dimensions of students' leisure attitudes according to their faculty status (p<0.05). As a result, it was seen that the income status of university students affected the behavioral attitude sub-dimension. It turned out that the scores of students of the Faculty of Physical Education regarding their free time were higher than those of other faculties. In general, it can be said that the average values of students' leisure attitudes are low. It is recommended by the authorities within the university to provide suitable environments where students can spend their free time.
