Abstract

Park Visit Experiences through Rhythmanalysis: A Netnographic Study

Year 2024, Volume: 35 Issue: 2, 50 - 69, 28.11.2024

Abstract

Although there are numerous studies in the literature addressing various aspects of urban parks, research examining parks from the perspective of Lefebvre’s rhythmanalysis is extremely limited. Therefore, the aim of this study is to conduct a rhythmanalysis of online Google Maps reviews for Ordsall Park and St. John’s Gardens in Manchester, UK. Using the Netnography method, the views and posts of park users were analyzed to identify the rhythms associated with these urban parks. The thematic content analysis conducted through Netnography revealed six main rhythms and six sub-rhythms. The main rhythms are inviting rhythms, somatic rhythms, break rhythms, nostalgic rhythms, park arrhythmias, and obstacle rhythms. Inviting rhythms consist of two sub-rhythms: landscape and spatial features, and atmosphere. Somatic rhythms comprise recreational activities and inner journeys and escapes. The final main rhythm with sub-rhythms is nostalgic rhythms, which include spiritual past and autobiographical memory. The results of the current study may have theoretical, methodological, and practical implications.
