Investigating Prospective Mathematics Teachers’ Understanding of the Boundedness of Infinite Number Sets

Abstract

In this study we aim to reveal the conceptions of preservice mathematics teachers regarding the boundedness of infinite number sets. The research is conducted with 51 teacher candidates attending to the Primary Mathematics Teaching program of a state university. A form consisting of open-ended questions is applied to collect data. Additionally, semi-structured interviews are conducted with 13 teacher candidates in order to obtain more detailed information. The data obtained is analyzed using the method of content analysis and presented in tabels. According to the results obtained, it is determined that prospective teachers perceived infinite number sets as "lacking at least one boundary", "unbounded", "without the lowest element" and "without the greatest element". However, it is found that prospective teachers think the lower bound as the lowest element of the set and the upper bound as the greatest element of the set.
