The Problem of the Identity of Jesus as “Son of God” in the New Testament

Abstract

One of the most important christological epithets for Jesus in the New Testament and in traditional Christianity is “Son of God” (ό υἱὸς τοῦ Θεοῦ). The epithet “Son of God” is seen in the pre-Christ period very commonly both in Jewish and pagan cultural circles. In fact, the epithet was received in the Jewish circles with more human significance and it must likewise have been used by the Jerusalem community of Jesus’ first followers as the royal title in connection with the concept of Christ. However, with the spread of Christianity in the pagan world, the meaning of “Son of God also changed. Paul of Tarsus and the authors of the Gospels of the New Testament interpreted this epithet as Jesus’ supernaturality and divinity,and repositioned Jesus in this frame. This article deals with the issue how Jesus was transformed from a “virtuous human” status to a “divine being” status through the meaning proposed by Paul in the epithet “Son of God”

İsa’nın Yeni Ahit’te “Tanrı Oğlu” olarak tanımlanması meselesi

Abstract

Yeni Ahit’te ve geleneksel Hıristiyanlık anlayışında İsa’yı tanımlamak amacıyla kullanılan en önemli kristolojik unvanlardan birisi “Tanrı Oğlu”dur (ό υἱὸς τοῦ Θεοῦ). Tanrı Oğlu anlayışının İsa öncesi dönemde hem Yahudi hem de pagan kültür çevrelerinde de yaygın bir şekilde benimsendiği görülmektedir. Nitekim Yahudi çevrelerinde daha çok beşeri anlamlarıyla yer bulan Tanrı Oğlu ifadesi, benzer şekilde İsa’nın ilk takipçilerinden oluşan Kudüs cemaati tarafından da İsa’ya Mesih kavramıyla bağlantılı şekilde kraliyet unvanı olarak nispet edilmiş olmalıdır. Ancak Hıristiyanlığın pagan dünyada yayılmasıyla birlikte Tanrı Oğlu unvanı da anlam değişikliğine uğramıştır. Bu süreçte Tarsuslu Pavlus ve Yeni Ahit’te yer alan İncil metinlerini kaleme alan yazarlar, söz konusu bu ifadeyi insanüstü ve ilahi bir varlık olarak yorumlamışlar ve İsa’yı da bu çerçevede yeniden konumlandırmışlardır. Bu makalede, “Tanrı Oğlu” ifadesine Pavlus tarafından yüklenen anlamla, İsa’nın “erdemli beşer” statüsünden “ilahi varlık” statüsüne nasıl dönüştürüldüğü ele alınmaktadır
