The Relationship Between Psychological Resilience And Coping Styles

Abstract

In this study, the relationship between psychological flexibility and coping styles is examined. This study, which was designed according to the relational survey model, was conducted with 330 university candidates studying at Inonu University Faculty of Education. "Psychological Flexibility Scale" and "Coping Styles Scale" were used to collect the data. Descriptive statistics, difference analyses, Pearson Product Moment Correlation Coefficient and regression analysis were used to analyse the data. As a result of the research, the mean psychological flexibility level of university students did not differ significantly according to gender. However, it was observed that the mean of humorous approach, which is one of the sub-factors of coping styles, was higher in males (p<0.05; X̄male = 5.91, X̄female = 5.16), the mean of turning towards religion (p<0.05; X̄male = 5.73, X̄female = 6.97) and the mean of revealing with focusing on emotions was higher in females (p<0.05; X̄male = 4.83, X̄female = 5.63). The averages of other coping styles were found to be insignificant according to gender. In addition, it was reported that psychological flexibility levels and coping styles of university students did not show a significant difference according to the department at the university. However, it was observed that psychological flexibility levels and coping styles of university students did not show a significant difference according to age variable. While it can be said that there is a positive significant relationship between psychological flexibility levels of university students and using instrumental social support, positive reinterpretation, acceptance and planning; it can be said that there are negative significant relationships between psychological flexibility levels and focusing and revealing emotions, substance use, quitting other activities, denial, emotional-focused disinterest, mental-focused disinterest and self-limitation. In addition to all these, it was determined that coping styles significantly predicted psychological flexibility by 35.3%. At the end of the study, suggestions were made to increase the psychological flexibility levels of university students and to improve the use of coping styles.

Psikolojik Esneklik ve Başa Çıkma Stilleri Arasındaki İlişkinin İncelenmesi

Abstract

Bu çalışmada, psikolojik esneklik ve başa çıkma stilleri arasındaki ilişki incelenmektedir. İlişkisel tarama modeline göre desenlenen bu araştırma, İnönü Üniversitesi Eğitim Fakültesinde öğrenim gören 330 üniversite adaylarıyla yürütülmüştür. Araştırmada verilerin toplanmasında “Psikolojik Esneklik Ölçeği” ve “Başa Çıkma Stilleri Ölçeği” kullanılmıştır. Verilerin analizinde betimsel istatistikler, fark analizleri, Pearson Çarpım Momentler Korelasyon Katsayısı ve regresyon analizi kullanılmıştır. Araştırma sonucunda üniversite öğrencilerinin psikolojik esneklik düzeyi ortalamaları cinsiyete göre anlamlı farklılık göstermemiştir. Bununla birlikte başa çıkma stillerinin alt faktörlerinden mizahi yaklaşımın ortalamasının erkeklerde daha yüksek olduğu (p<0.05; X̄erkek = 5.91, X̄kadın = 5.16), dine yönelme (p<0.05; X̄erkek = 5.73, X̄kadın = 6.97) ve duygulara odaklanmayla ortaya koymanın ortalamasının ise kadınlarda daha yüksek olduğu (p<0.05; X̄erkek = 4.83, X̄kadın = 5.63) görülmüştür. Diğer başa çıkma stillerinin ortalamalarının ise cinsiyete göre anlamsız olduğu görülmüştür. Ayrıca üniversite öğrencilerinin psikolojik esneklik düzeyleri ve başa çıkma stillerinin üniversitedeki bölüme göre anlamlı bir fark göstermediği raporlanmıştır. Bununla birlikte üniversite öğrencilerinin psikolojik esneklik düzeyleri ve başa çıkma stillerinin yaş değişkenine göre anlamlı bir göstermediği görülmüştür. Üniversite öğrencilerinin psikolojik esneklik düzeyleri ile araçsal sosyal destek kullanma, olumlu yeniden yorumlama, kabullenme ve planlama arasında pozitif yönlü anlamlı ilişki olduğu söylenebilirken; psikolojik esneklik düzeyleri ile duygulara odaklanma ve ortaya koyma, madde kullanma, diğer etkinlikleri bırakma, yadsıma, duygusal odaklı ilgiyi kesme, zihinsel odaklı ilgiyi kesme ve kendini sınırlandırma arasında negatif yönlü anlamlı ilişkiler olduğu söylenebilir. Tüm bunlara ek olarak, başa çıkma stillerinin psikolojik esnekliği %35.3 oranında anlamlı olarak yordadığı belirlenmiştir. Araştırmanın sonunda üniversite öğrencilerin psikolojik esneklik düzeylerinin yükselmesi ve başa çıkma stillerinin kullanımının geliştirilmesine yönelik önerilerde bulunulmuştur.
