Sonsuz Sayı Kümelerinin Karşılaştırılması Bağlamında Sonsuzluk Kavramına İlişkin Öğrenci Algılarının İncelenmesi

Abstract

Bu araştırmada matematik öğretmen adaylarının ve lise öğrencilerinin sonsuzluk kavramına ilişkin algıları sonsuz elemanlı kümelerinin eleman sayılarının karşılaştırılması bağlamında incelenmiştir. Araştırmanın çalışma grubunu 139’u matematik öğretmen adayı, 129’u ise lise öğrencileri olmak üzere toplam 268 kişi oluşturmaktadır. Bu araştırmanın katılımcıları amaçlı örnekleme yöntemlerinden biri olan kolay ulaşılabilir örnekleme yöntemi ile belirlenmiştir. Araştırmanın verileri sonsuz kümelerin sıralaması ile ilişkili üç problemden oluşan Sonsuz Sayı Kümeleri Karşılaştırma Testi yardımıyla toplanmıştır. Araştırmadan elde edilen veriler içerik analizi yardımıyla analiz edilmiştir. Verilerin analizi sonucunda katılımcıların çözümlerinin literatür ile uyumlu olacak şekilde “Parça-bütün, Tek Sonsuzluk, Birebir Eşleme, Sonsuzluk Karşılaştırılamaz ve Diğer” kategorilerinde toplandığı görülmüştür. Araştırmada problemlere verilen doğru cevapların genellikle %50’den aşağı olduğu ve öğretmen adaylarının lise öğrencilerine göre doğru cevap oranlarının daha yüksek olduğu tespit edilmiştir. Tüm katılımcılar içerisinde en fazla doğru cevabın %70.9 ile doğal sayılar ile tek ve çift doğal sayılar kümesinin birleşiminin karşılaştırma probleminde olduğu tespit edilmiştir. Bununla birlikte öğretmen adaylarının ve lise öğrencilerinin problem çözümlerinde sezgisel açıklamalarının olduğu görülmüştür.

Investigation of Student Perceptions of the Concept of Infinity in the context of comparing the number of elements of infinite sets

Abstract

In this study, the perceptions of pre-service mathematics teachers and high school students about infinity were examined in the context of comparing the number of elements of infinite element sets. The study group consisted of 268 participants, 139 of whom were pre-service mathematics teachers and 129 of whom were high school students. The participants of this study were determined by the convenience sampling method, which is one of the purposeful sampling methods. The study data were collected with the help of the Infinite Number Sets Comparison Test consisting of three problems related to the ordering of infinite sets. The data obtained from the study were analyzed with the help of content analysis. As a result of the participants data analysis, it was seen that the participants’ solutions were collected in the categories of ‘Part-whole, Single Infinity. The study determined that the correct answers to the problems were generally less than 50% and the correct answer rates of pre-service teachers were higher than high school students. It was found that the highest percentage of correct answers among all participants was 70.9% in the problem of comparing the combination of natural numbers and the set of odd and even natural numbers. In addition, it was observed that pre-service teachers and high school students had intuitive explanations in problem solving.
