Secondary School Students’ Experiences of Fear of Missing Out and its Reflections on Their Daily Lives
This study aims to examine the experiences of secondary school students regarding the fear of missing out and their reflections on their daily lives. The study group consists of 12 students, 8 of whom are women and 4 of whom are boys. The study was designed in the phenomenological design, one of the qualitative research models. The study data were collected using a semi-structured interview form developed by the researcher. The qualitative data obtained in the study were analyzed using the content analysis method. As a result of the content analysis, it was observed that the participants defined the fear of missing out in three categories: psychological, social and technological definitions. It was concluded that the participants experienced feelings of inadequacy, feeling left behind, anxiety and stress, social isolation and dependency along with the fear of missing out. In addition, it was concluded that the fear of missing out in the participants' daily lives caused distraction, sleep problems, mental fatigue, loss of self-confidence and health problems. As a result of the study, it was concluded that the participants used methods such as managing social media use, focusing on their own lives and practicing awareness in coping with the fear of missing out. The results obtained were discussed in the light of the relevant literature.
