Banknotes and gastronomy
Abstract
Banknotes are among the key elements that reflect a nation's identity and values. The figures depicted on banknotes provide not only citizens but also visiting tourists with valuable insights into the country's history, art, nature, and cultural heritage. While intangible cultural heritage elements are often associated with historical landmarks, prominent figures, or artistic representations, gastronomy is also an integral part of this heritage. Culinary traditions play a crucial role in understanding societies' histories, lifestyles, and values. This study examines the presence of gastronomic elements on banknotes by analyzing the most widely circulated and strongest 16 currencies worldwide. Using a qualitative research approach, the analysis reveals that only the Norwegian Krone features a gastronomic representation. In particular, the depiction of codfish highlights the species' economic and cultural significance for Norway. These findings indicate that food culture is generally overlooked in banknote design, with visual representations of cultural heritage primarily focusing on historical landmarks, political figures, and artistic symbols. However, incorporating gastronomic elements into banknote designs could serve as an effective tool for promoting a country's culinary identity, enhancing cultural awareness, and strengthening its potential, particularly in the field of gastronomic tourism.
