Investigations on the determination of effective chemicals against the seed rot agents of maize fields in Black Sea Region of Türkiye.

Abstract

The most important agents causing seed rot in corn are soil-borne Pythium spp. and seed borne Fusarium moniliforme. This study was carried out to determine the efficient chemicals against these agents in Türkiye. Experiments were conducted in field conditions in the first three years (1989, 1990 and 1991) and the sixth year (1994).The studies were carried out in controlled conditions (in laboratory and low plastic tunnel) in the fourth year (1992) and in the fifth year (1993). TTM-8119 corn variety was used as material during all experiments but FR-619, pure line corn variety in the first year. All experiments were conducted in different periods in the same season and benomyl, thiram, mancozeb, carbendazim, maneb and captan were used as chemicals. Fungus originated from seed and soil were determined before and after seed sowing. Also, the soil temperatures were determined. Experiments were designed according to the randomized complete block and completely randomized design with seven treatments and generally four replications. Each plot was formed as two sowing line and 50-80 seeds were sown in each plot. Fungus, F. moniliforme, produced on millet seed was also inoculated on one sowing line of plots in the first three years. Experiments were conducted in rolled towels and chest filled with soil and barnyard manure mixtures in the fourth and the fifth years. Some chest were inoculated F.moniliforme suspensions. F. moniliforme was produced on PDA media in the laboratory conditions. Seeds were sown during April and May in the field conditions frequently and in March in controlled conditions.
Countings, generally, were made 2-3 weeks after the emergence F. moniliforme was observed on the seeds were sown, commonly, whereas Pythium sp., Fusarium sp., Penicillium sp. and Alternaria sp. were commonly seen in fields soils. Soil temperatures were not recorded in the first and second years. Soil temperatures during the third year, sixth year (except the last three sowing) and under chest conditions (fourth and fifth years) were average 15.5°C, 13°C and 11°C (9.5-12.5°C), respectively. Differences between disease ratio at the control and the other plots were not important in field experiments conducted in the first, the second, the third and the sixth years. So, it was not concluded if the chemicals were effective or not under field conditions. Tested chemical showed 45-100% effectiveness according to the results of rolled towel test in the fourth and fifth years, but benomyl and carbendazim did not give effective control. All the chemicals were effective, but carbendazim showed 45-85% effectiveness in the fourth year and 45-100 % effectiveness in the fifth year according to the results of chest experiments. Experiments conducted under low temperatures showed that F.moniliforme could not infect corn seeds. Field experiments showed that seeds can emerge without becoming infected if they are sowed in early season including April. As a result of the rolled towel and chest tests, contact chemicals gave 45-100% effectiveness, but systemic chemicals were not effective against the disease. Although it could not be get as a result from the field experiments, they might be used as seed chemicals (thiram, captan, maneb ve mancozeb) against having seed rot problem because of tested chemicals showed 40-100% effectiveness under controlled conditions.
