Abstract

Nuclear energy constitutes a viable alternative to the renewable energy sources since it provides uninterrupted power. Commercial use of nuclear power takes place via the controlled fission reaction that takes place within nuclear reactors. In this work, neutrons that trigger the fission reaction are separated into two as prompt and delayed neutrons. Two-point kinetic model is solved numerically and iteratively for a supercritical reactor. Core, reflector, and delayed neutron numbers are computed as a function of time by selecting initial values for a situation where the reactivity increases linearly. Our results show that growing delayed neutron fraction β breaks the exponential growth trend of the core and reflector neutron numbers. When =0.5 value is reached, core and reflector neutron numbers stabilize, while they converge to zero asymptotically in >0.5 region. While delayed neutrons increase exponentially when <0.5, they grow linearly when =0.5.When >0.5, delayed neutron number asymptotically converges to a finite value. In this manner, it is observed that the fission reaction can be kept under control in a supercritical reactor by ramping up the delayed neutron fraction.

Süperkritik Bir Nükleer Reaktörde İki-Nokta Kinetik Modelin İteratif Çözümü

Year 2021, Volume: 8 Issue: 2, 938 - 948, 31.12.2021
