The Reşitharmanyeri Rock-Cut Tomb: A Hybrid Late Classical–Early Hellenistic Funerary Monument in the Territory of Adramytteion

Abstract

This article presents the Reşitharmanyeri Monument, a rock-cut funerary structure of probable Late Classical–Early Hellenistic date, uncovered during the Reşitköy Dam rescue excavations in the rural territory of Adramytteion, in the southern hinterland of the Gulf of Edremit. The monument comprises a rock-cut burial chamber with three klinai, an intermediate passage interpreted here as a dromos, a stepped eastern entrance, and a rubble-stone retaining wall indicating a tumulus-like arrangement. Despite extensive damage caused by looting, the surviving features show that Reşitharmanyeri was not a simple rock-cut tomb but a hybrid funerary monument combining chamber-tomb architecture with elements of the tumulus tradition. Its monumentality derived less from canonical tumulus scale than from its adaptation to the local topography, its axial access, and an earthen exterior arrangement bounded by the retaining wall. The limited ceramic finds and evidence from nearby contexts support a Late Classical–Early Hellenistic chronological horizon; a date in the 4th century BCE is proposed as a cautious working hypothesis. Within the wider Adramyttene landscape, the monument adds a funerary dimension to the evidence for settlement, defence, agricultural use, and territorial organisation, while comparative material situates it within the broader funerary repertoire of north-western Anatolia.
