Exploration of CEIT Prospective Teachers’ Views on Technology and Human Values with the Symbolic Interaction Approach
Abstract
The purpose of the current study was to explore prospective teachers’ point of views on technology and human values relation from the symbolic interaction approach lens. The participants of the study consisted of 12 Computer Education and Instructional Technology department prospective teachers chosen in line with criterion sampling strategy. In this qualitative research study, the data were collected through focus group interviews. Open coding was used to analyze data by benefitting symbolic Interaction approach lens. The findings showed that prospective teachers mentioned both positive and negative effects of technology in general use. According to them, positive effects related with information dissemination speed, and communication while negative effects included isolation and distraction because of technology. The prospective teachers mentioned social media platforms and technology in general while speaking on the value symbols. According to them, the symbols related with social media was to being phenomenon and sharing videos, texts and information. The prospective teachers stated that technological developments have an influence on students’ value orientations such as “respect”, “love”, “responsibility”, “patriotism”, “benevolence”, “friendship”, “honesty”, “self-control”, and “patience”.
