Investigation of Factors Affecting the Intention of Drop out of School in Academic and Vocational High School Students via Logistic Regression Analysis

Abstract

In the current study, it was aimed to examine factors predicting the intention of drop out of school in academic and vocational high school students. Participants of the study are 1133 high school students receiving education in public schools in the city of Burdur. The data of the study were collected by using a questionnaire developed by the researchers. The data were analyzed via Logistic Regression. According to the findings, 15% of the students consider dropping out of school. This rate was found to be 14% among the academic high school students and 17% among the vocational high school students. Common significant variables of the study are want to continue higher education, receiving disciplinary punishment and mother’s education level. Not want to continue higher education, receiving disciplinary punishment and mother’s lower level of education were found to increase the possibility of dropping out of school in both the academic and vocational high school students. Absenteeism and working in an income-generating job outside the school were found to significantly predict students’ intention of drop out of school only in the academic high school students and grade point average and grade level were found to significantly predict students’ intention of drop out only in the vocational high school students.

Akademik ve Mesleki Lise Öğrencilerinde Okul Terki Düşüncesini Etkileyen Faktörlerin Lojistik Regresyon Analizi ile İncelenmesi

Abstract

Bu araştırmada, akademik ve mesleki lise öğrencilerinde okul terki düşüncesini yordayan faktörleri incelemek amaçlanmıştır. Araştırmanın katılımcılarını, Burdur il merkezinde devlet okullarında öğrenim gören 1133 lise öğrencisi oluşturmaktadır. Çalışmanın verileri, araştırmacılar tarafından geliştirilen soru formu ile toplanmıştır. Veriler, Lojistik Regresyon ile analiz edilmiştir. Bulgulara göre, öğrencilerin %15’i okulu terk etmeyi düşünmektedir. Bu oran akademik liselerde %14, mesleki liselerde %17’dir. Üniversiteye devam etmeyi isteme, disiplin cezası alma, anne eğitimi, araştırmanın ortak anlamlı değişkenleridir. Üniversiteye devam etmeme isteği, disiplin cezası alma ve düşük anne eğitimi hem akademik hem de mesleki lise öğrencilerinin okul terkini düşünme olasılığını yükseltmektedir. Devamsızlık ve okul dışında gelir getiren bir işte çalışma sadece akademik liselerde, not ortalaması ve sınıf seviyesi ise sadece mesleki liselerde öğrencilerin okul terki düşüncesi üzerinde anlamlı bir yordayıcıdır.
