Abstract

Abstract

Purpose: This study aimed to investigate Brain Gym activity programme on university students’ executive functions.
Materials and Methods: The study was carried out with the participation of 33 sedantery university students with mean age 19,91±1,23 years. The participants were randomly assigned into two groups: Study Group (SG) and Control Group (CG). The 15 participants in the SG participated in a 50 minute Structured Brain Gym Activity (SBGA) programme for two days a week in total of 8 weeks. The 18 participants in the CG didn’t participate in any regular physical activity during this period. All participants were administrated executive function tests (D2 attention test, Stroop Color Test, Verbal Fluency Test) before and after the study.
Results: After statistical analysis, it was found that Stroop Color and D2 test results of the SG after 8 weeks showed significant change in a positive way, while there was no difference in both tests in CG. Verbal fluency test results showed no significant difference in both groups after 8 weeks.
Conclusion: The results showed that an 8 week of SBGA programme contributed to the improvement of executive functions such as inhibitory control and selective attention of the participant university students.
