THE DISSOLUTION OF DIRECTION: DESERT, QUEST, AND THE COMPELLED PRESENTNESS IN OLIVER LAXE’S SIRÂT

Abstract

This article examines Oliver Laxe's Sirât through the relationship between space, quest, and existence. It argues that the desert in the film is not simply a neutral backdrop for the events, but the spatial force through which the teleological structure of the search is gradually undone, exposing the subject to disorientation and to what the article calls compelled presentness. In this respect, Sirât is read less as the story of a father looking for his missing daughter than as a film about a search that loses the very horizon of meaning that once sustained it. The article develops this argument through a phenomenological-hermeneutic close reading of the film's spatial and narrative structures. Its conceptual line draws on Nietzsche's account of teleological dissolution, Heidegger's notions of thrownness and uncanniness, and Camus's reflections on the absurd and persistence. Moving through the film's main narrative stages, the article asks how the desert changes in function, how it shapes the viewer's experience, and how this experience can be interpreted through these philosophical perspectives. In this reading, Sirât appears as a film about the present, in which direction no longer works as a clear path toward salvation. Meaning dissolves between the world’s refusal to provide answers and the desert’s absence of orientation, and yet the body is compelled to carry on.
