Abstract

This study is the translation into our language of the section “Language” of the book titled General Anthropology, edited by Franz Boas. Although this chapter aims to reveal the role of language among human societies in general and under various titles, it has been the source of important linguistically important ideas. The author's determinations regarding the role of grammar in language, especially under the title of grammar, constituted an important mainstay in the language-mind relationship discussions that followed. According to Boas, grammar, in addition to determining the place of words in sentences, also determines the aspects that “necessary” be expressed in each experience. These ideas of Boas directed Edward Sapir to study the languages of the Native Americans and also inspired the ideas of the Russian-American linguist Roman Jakobson. Guy Deutscher, while revealing the effect of language on the mind, was supported by the ideas of Boas in this section and pointed out that theoretically every language can express everything, but differences between languages should be sought in the structures that the speakers have to express. According to him, these “necessary” structures in language also have an effect on the minds of the speakers.
