RADEC-Based Environmental Education: A Review of Readiness and Awareness

Abstract

This research examines the effects of environmental education activities based on the RADEC (Read, Answer, Discuss, Explain, Create) model on the readiness levels and environmental awareness of pre-service preschool and elementary school teachers. The research aimed to develop pre-service teachers’ knowledge, attitudes, and pedagogical competencies by focusing on the importance of addressing environmental issues at an early age. In the study, an explanatory sequential design based on a mixed methods approach was employed, and the sample consisted of 70 pre-service preschool and elementary school teachers enrolled in an environmental education course. Quantitative data were collected using the RADEC Readiness and Environmental Awareness Scales in a pre-test–post-test format, while qualitative data were collected through semi-structured interviews. Quantitative data were analyzed using descriptive statistics and paired samples t-test, while qualitative data were analyzed through content analysis. Quantitative findings revealed significant improvements in pre-service teachers’ readiness for the model and their environmental awareness following the implementation. Qualitative findings revealed that pre-service teachers described the RADEC model as a structured, student-centered, and interactive learning process. It was emphasized that the creative activities, particularly those in the 'Create' stage, contributed to the development of cognitive flexibility and original ideas. The results showed that the RADEC model has the potential to support pre-service teachers’ environmental responsibility and pedagogical skills in interdisciplinary contexts such as environmental education. In this context, it is recommended that the model be integrated into teacher education programs, that environmental education content be structured to promote changes in attitudes and behaviors, and that further research be supported by long-term implementations across different disciplines.

RADEC Temelli Çevre Eğitimi: Hazır Bulunuşluk ve Farkındalık Üzerine Bir İnceleme

Abstract

Bu araştırma, RADEC (Read, Answer, Discuss, Explain, Create – Okuma, Cevaplama, Tartışma, Açıklama, Oluşturma) modeline dayalı çevre eğitimi etkinliklerinin, okul öncesi ve sınıf öğretmen adaylarının modele yönelik hazır bulunuşluk düzeyleri ile çevre farkındalıkları üzerindeki etkisini incelemektedir. Araştırma, çevresel sorunların erken yaşta ele alınmasının önemine odaklanarak öğretmen adaylarının bilgi, tutum ve pedagojik yeterliklerini geliştirmeyi amaçlamıştır. Araştırmada karma yöntem kökenli açıklayıcı sıralı desen kullanılmış olup, örneklemi çevre eğitimi dersi alan 70 sınıf ve okul öncesi öğretmen adayı oluşturmaktadır. Nicel veriler RADEC Hazır Bulunuşluk ve Çevre Farkındalık Ölçekleri ile ön test–son test şeklinde; nitel veriler ise yarı yapılandırılmış görüşmelerle toplanmıştır. Nicel veriler betimsel istatistikler ve bağımlı örneklemler t-testiyle, nitel veriler ise içerik analiziyle çözümlenmiştir. Nicel bulgular, uygulama sonrasında adayların modele ilişkin hazır bulunuşluklarının hem de çevre farkındalıklarında anlamlı artışlar yaşandığını göstermektedir. Nitel bulgular ise adayların RADEC modelini yapılandırılmış, öğrenci merkezli ve etkileşimli bir öğrenme süreci olarak tanımladıklarını ortaya koymuştur. Özellikle “Oluştur” (Create) aşamasındaki yaratıcı etkinliklerin düşünsel esneklik ve özgün fikir geliştirme açısından geliştirici olduğu vurgulanmıştır. Elde edilen sonuçlar, RADEC modelinin çevre eğitimi gibi disiplinlerarası içeriklerde öğretmen adaylarının çevresel sorumluluk ve pedagojik becerilerini destekleyici bir potansiyele sahip olduğunu göstermektedir. Bu kapsamda, modelin öğretmen yetiştirme programlarına entegrasyonu, çevre eğitimi içeriklerinin tutum ve davranış değişimini hedefleyecek şekilde yapılandırılması ve farklı disiplinlerde uzun süreli uygulamalarla desteklenen yeni araştırmalar önerilmektedir.
