COMPARATIVE ANALYSIS OF COMMUNICATION THEORIES IN TERMS OF FUNCTIONALIT

Abstract

This study aims to analyze the functionality of communication theories within the framework of functionalism and the four fundamental functions of the media. The societal impacts of different communication theories have been comparatively evaluated in relation to the media’s functions of information dissemination, entertainment, socialization, and public opinion formation. The findings indicate that each theory contributes uniquely to different media functions. Semiotics and Structuralism shape social structures through meaning production and symbols, while the Hypodermic Needle Theory emphasizes the direct and short-term effects of media messages. The Frankfurt School and Critical Theory examine how ideological hegemony is maintained through media, whereas the Agenda-Setting Theory explores the media's power in shaping societal priorities. Cultural Studies and Technological Determinism analyze the role of media in individual and societal socialization processes. A comparative analysis of these theories' functions has not been previously identified in the literature. This study provides a comprehensive and comparative assessment of the relationship between communication theories and media functions, contributing to the discipline. Future research may examine how these theories are restructured in the context of digital media and propose new theoretical perspectives on the transformation of communication processes.

İLETİŞİM KURAMLARININ İŞLEVSELLİK AÇISINDAN KARŞILAŞTIRMALI ANALİZİ

Abstract

Bu çalışma, iletişim kuramlarının işlevselliğini işlevselcilik bağlamında ve medyanın dört temel işlevi çerçevesinde analiz etmeyi amaçlamaktadır. Medyanın bilgilendirme, eğlendirme, sosyalleştirme ve kamuoyu oluşturma işlevleri doğrultusunda, farklı iletişim kuramlarının toplumsal etkileri karşılaştırmalı olarak değerlendirilmiştir. Bulgular, her kuramın medyanın farklı işlevlerine özgün katkılar sunduğunu ortaya koymaktadır. Göstergebilim ve Yapısalcılık, anlam üretimi ve semboller aracılığıyla toplumsal yapıları şekillendirirken, Sihirli Mermi Kuramı, medya mesajlarının doğrudan ve kısa vadeli etkilerini vurgulamaktadır. Frankfurt Okulu ve Eleştirel Kuram, medya aracılığıyla ideolojik hegemoninin nasıl sürdürüldüğünü ele alırken, Gündem Belirleme Kuramı medyanın toplumsal öncelikleri yönlendirme gücünü incelemektedir. Kültürel Çalışmalar ve Teknolojik Belirleyicilik Kuramı ise medyanın bireysel ve toplumsal sosyalleşme süreçlerine etkisini analiz etmektedir. Literatürde bu kuramların işlevlerine yönelik karşılaştırmalı bir analize rastlanmamıştır. Çalışma, iletişim kuramları ve medyanın işlevleri arasındaki ilişkiyi kapsamlı bir şekilde ve karşılaştırmalı değerlendirerek disipline katkı sunmaktadır. Gelecekteki araştırmalar, bu kuramların dijital medya bağlamında nasıl yeniden yapılandığını inceleyerek iletişim süreçlerindeki dönüşümlere yönelik yeni teorik açılımlar sağlayabilir.
