“Al-'Ilal al-Saghir”, the last chapter of Tirmidhi's al-Jami', is one of the first works to record certain issues in hadith methodology. In the last chapter of Abu Bakr ibn al-Arabi's Arizat al-Ahwazi, the earliest and full commentary on al-Jami', the link between the part on certain hadith methodological issues in six sections and “al-'Ilal” seems to have often been overlooked. However, this section serves as a categorization of “al-’Ilal al-Saghir”, as well as the commentator's additions and annotations to the chapter. Moreover, the relevant chapter is significant because it was authored by a hadith scholar who lived between the mutaqaddimun and mutaahhirun periods in the study of hadith and was both a jurist and exegete. It is remarkable that Ibn al-Arabi tried to base hadith methodology on the Qur’anic verses and hadiths as much as possible in this section. It is evident that the author drew on the works of fiqh methodology wherever necessary, and that he had unique approaches that do not carry over to subsequent works on hadith methodology. In light of all these, this chapter of Arizat al-Ahwazi on hadith methodology is valuable since it reflects the state of the science of hadith methodology in the sixth century AH.
