PREDICTABILITY OF IDIOMS ACCORDING TO THEIR SEMANTIC AND COGNITIVE FEATURES: AN APPLICATION IN FOREIGN LANGUAGE

Abstract

Idiom studies within the last years drew attention to the necessity of examiningthese linguistic features with different point of views. In this study, idioms are classified according to their semantic and cognitive features and these idioms are presented to Turkish university students within the framework of foreign language inorder to test their idiomatic knowledge in English on a five-point Likert scale. Then,the students are asked to predict the meanings of the idioms which they don’t know.The findings of the study show that the students can predict particular kinds ofidioms more successfully and guess the meanings of the presented idioms using specific strategies

DEYİMLERİN ANLAMBİLİMSEL VE BİLİŞSEL ÖZELLİKLERİNE GÖRE TAHMİN EDİLEBİLİRLİĞİ : YABANCI DİLDE BİR UYGULAMA

Abstract

Son yıllarda hız kazanan deyim çalışmaları, bu dilsel birimlere yönelik araştırmaların farklı bakış açılarıyla ele alınmasını gerekli kılmaktadır. Bu çalışmadadeyimler, anlambilimsel ve bilişsel özelliklerine göre ele alınmış ve söz konusu özelliklere göre sınıflandırılan deyimlere ilişkin bir uygulama yapılmıştır. Türk üniversite öğrencileriyle yabancı dil bilgisi çerçevesinde gerçekleştirilen bu çalışmada,öncelikle öğrencilerin likert tipi beşli ölçek üzerinde, anlambilimsel ve bilişsel özelliklerine göre sınıflandırılan İngilizce deyimlere ilişkin bilgisi sınanmış, ardındanonların anlamını bilmedikleri deyimlerin anlamlarını ne oranda tahmin edebildikleri gösterilmeye çalışılmıştır. Çalışmanın sonucunda öğrencilerin belli türdekideyimlerin anlamını daha kolay tahmin edebildikleri ve tahminlerini belli stratejilerle biçimlendirdiği gözlenmiştir
