EMOTION WORDS AND EMOTION-LADEN WORDS IN TURKISH

Abstract

Emotions, which enabled humans to adapt to the environment and survive during the evolution process, are at the center of our lives. Emotion words, verbal manifestations of emotions, have long been the subject of many disciplines. More specifically, studies addressing the cognitive aspects of emotion words have revealed that they are different from neutral words and need to be classified separately, even within themselves. This study aims to reveal these differences in Turkish words. Participants were native speakers of Turkish. They were asked to categorize the words in a list into two groups according to the criteria accepted in the literature. Accordingly, they were told that the first group should include words that directly refer to emotions (sadness, happiness), and the second group should include words that do not directly refer to emotions, but evoke them (death, wedding). Considering the participants' consensus rates, words were categorized as emotion words and emotion-laden words. Researchers in the field of psycholinguistics or other related fields who will conduct experimental studies with Turkish words as linguistic stimuli may refer to the list provided in this study.

TÜRKÇEDEKİ DUYGU SÖZCÜKLERİ VE DUYGU YÜKLÜ SÖZCÜKLER

Abstract

Evrim sürecinde insanoğlunun çevreye adapte olması ve hayatta kalmasını sağlamış olan duygular, hayatımızın merkezinde yer almaktadır. Duyguların dil ile ifade edilmesini sağlayan duygu sözcükleri ise uzun süredir birçok disiplinin konusu olmuştur. Duygu sözcüklerinin zihinsel işleyişini ele alan çalışmalarda bu tür sözcüklerin diğer sözcüklerden farklı olduğu, hatta kendi içlerinde bile sınıflandırılması gerekliliği ortaya çıkmıştır. Bu farklılıkların Türkçede nasıl olduğunu hedefleyen bu çalışmada ana dili Türkçe olan bireylerden bir liste halinde verilen sözcükleri alanyazında kabul edilen ölçütlere göre iki gruba ayırmaları istenmiştir. Buna göre, ilk grupta, doğrudan duygulara işaret eden sözcüklerin (üzüntü, sevinç), ikinci grupta ise doğrudan duygulara işaret etmeyen, ancak bunları çağrıştıran sözcüklerin (ölüm, düğün) yer alması gerektiği söylenmiştir. Katılımcıların uzlaşı oranları göz önünde bulundurularak, bu sözcükler duygu sözcükleri ve duygu yüklü sözcükler olarak ayrılmış ve bir liste halinde sunulmuştur. Bu sunumun psikodilbilim ya da farklı disiplerde yapılacak deneysel çalışmalarda Türkçe sözcükleri dilsel uyaranlar olarak kullanmayı planlayan araştırmacılara fikir vermesi amaçlanmaktadır.
