DETERMINING THE PERCEPTIONS OF PROSPECTIVE TEACHERS IN RELATION TO MEASUREMENT AND EVALUATION COURSE THROUGH METAPHORS
Abstract
The purpose of the research is to
determine the perceptions of prospective teachers in relation to measurement
and evaluation course through metaphors. The phenomenology which is one of the
qualitative research designs is used in this research. The participants of
research consists of the prospective teachers who study on English language
education,
social science education, Turkish education, and Computer education and
Instructional Technology on Faculty of Education at Trakya University and take
measurement and evaluation course. The participants which was constituted
with convenient sampling method includes 228 prospective teachers who are
studying at different teacher’s programs. The participants were requested to
complete the blanks in the sentence “Measurement and evaluation course is as…;
because…”. Content analysis was used for the evaluation of data. According to results, the prospective
teachers expressed 137 valid metaphors about measurement and evaluation course.
These metaphors are grouped under the four categories as “the course’s being
difficult and having a complex structure”, “the relatedness of the issues with
each other”, “the high number of issues” and “properties of issues. When the
metaphors are examined, the measurement and evaluation course is described as
discrete, detailed and complicated by prospective teachers. This situation
negatively affects their perceptions of the course. The course is also
perceived as difficult by them.
