Evaluation of Obesity and Risk Factors in Cats Examined at Selected Veterinary Clinics in İstanbul

Abstract

This study evaluated the prevalence of obesity and associated risk factors in 200 cats examined at selected veterinary clinics in Istanbul. Cats were divided into two groups based on their body condition score (BCS), those with a BCS of 7 or higher (60%) and those below 7 (40%). Among cats with a BCS ≥7, the most common conditions were gastrointestinal disorders (20.0%), behavioral problems (20.0%), and urinary system diseases (16.67%). Conversely, for cats with a BCS <7, dental and oral health issues (22.5%) and gastrointestinal disorders (21.25%) were predomi-nant. In the present study, Tabby cats were 60 %, British cats 15.5%, Scottish cats 8%, Persian cats 6%, Angora cats 3%, Van cats 2.5%, Siamese cats 2.5%, hybrid breeds 2.0% and Sphynx cats 0.5%. Age distribution showed that 30% of the cats were 1-3 years old, 45% were 4-7 years old, and 25% were 8 years old or older. It was found that aging is directly proportional to obesity in cats. (P<0.05). Such variables as breed, neutering status, and the number of house-holds were found to have no significant effect on the odds ratio of obesity (P>0.05). The study underscores the widesp-read impacts of obesity on feline health and emphasizes the need for energy intake and physical activity management.

İstanbul İlindeki Bazı Veteriner Kliniklerinde Muayene Edilen Kedilerde Obezite ve Risk Faktörlerinin Değerlendirilmesi

Abstract

Bu çalışmada, İstanbul'daki bazı veteriner kliniklerinde muayene edilen 200 kedi üzerinde obezite prevalansı ve risk faktörleri değerlendirilmiştir. Kediler, vücut kondisyon skorlarına (VKS) göre VKS'si 7 ve üzeri olanlar (%60) ile 7'nin altında olanlar (%40) olmak üzere iki gruba ayrılmıştır. VKS'si 7 ve üzerinde olan kedilerde en yaygın görülen hastalıklar; gastrointestinal rahatsızlıklar (%20.0), davranış problemleri (%20.0) ve üriner sistem hastalıkları (%16.67) olarak belirlenmiştir. VKS'si 7'nin altında olan kedilerde ağız ve diş hastalıkları (%22.5) ile gastrointestinal rahatsızlıklar (%21.25) öne çıkmıştır. Araştırmada Tekir kediler %60, British kediler %15.5, Scottish kediler %8, İran ırkı kediler %6, Ankara kedisi %3, Van kedisi %2.5, Siyam kedileri %2.5, melez ırklar %2.0 ve Sphynx ırkı kediler %0.5 oranında yer almıştır. Yaş dağılımı incelendiğinde, kedilerin %30’unun 1-3 yaş, %45’inin 4-7 yaş, %25’inin ise 8 yaş ve üzeri olduğu gözlenmiştir. Araştırmada yer alan kedilerin %53.5’i erkek; %46.5’ i dişidir. Kedilerin yaşındaki her 1 birimlik artışın obezite görülme oranını arttırdığı bulunmuştur (P<0.05). Irk, kısırlaştırma ve evde yaşayan kişi sayısı değişkenlerinin ise obezite odds oranı üzerinde anlamlı etkisi bulunmamıştır (P>0.05). Bu çalışma, obezitenin kedi sağlığı üzerinde yaygın etkileri olduğunu ve enerji alımı ile fiziksel aktivitenin kontrol edilmesi gerektiğini vurgulamaktadır.
