Abstract

Abstract

Reading food labels plays an important role in the adequate and balanced nutrition of individuals. The purpose of this study is to examine the nutritional label reading behaviour of undergraduate students and determine the most important factors in purchasing. The study was conducted in Turkey between February and May 2019. In the first part of the questionnaire, which was prepared in four parts, the demographic characteristics of the participants were determined. In some sections, questions were asked using a 5-point Likert scale, and in others a 3-point Likert scale. A total of 520 undergraduate students participated in the study. The questionnaire was filled in by the participants face-to-face or via the online platform. In the study, p<0.05 was accepted as the statistical significance. In the study, it was observed that expiration date was a factor always considered by the majority of female (67.4%) and male students (55.6%). Total fat, saturated/unsaturated fat information indicated on the label showed a significant difference between genders (p<0.05). It was determined that female participants paid more attention to sugar content (p<0.05). On the other hand, it was determined that students studying in the field of health paid more attention to some nutritional information (calorie, total fat, sugar) written on the label (p<0.05). In line with our findings, it was concluded that it would be beneficial to develop new strategies and training programs for reading food labels.
