A Qualitative Examination of Female Academics’ Awareness of Blockchain Technology

Abstract

This study examines female academics’ levels of awareness and perceptions of blockchain technology, as well as how they make sense of this technology within an academic context. Adopting a qualitative phenomenological research design, semi-structured interviews were conducted with ten female academics employed at Isparta University of Applied Sciences and Süleyman Demirel University. The data were analyzed manually in line with the interpretative phenomenological analysis approach; meaningful statements were coded and grouped under sub-themes and broader analytical categories. The findings indicate that participants predominantly associate blockchain technology with security, transparency, data management, and reliable record-keeping systems. Although the overall level of awareness is limited, perceptions of blockchain were found to be mostly positive. Participants considered this technology to offer significant opportunities not only for academic processes but also for areas such as education, healthcare, finance, and trade. However, lack of practical experience, insufficient technical knowledge, and limited digital competencies emerged as key barriers to its wider adoption. The study contributes to the literature by demonstrating that blockchain awareness among female academics is shaped by technological knowledge, disciplinary background, institutional support, and access to digital opportunities.
