Examination of the Hidden Relationships Between Banks’ Sector Credits and Real Sector Performance

Abstract

This study purposes to empirically examine the relationship between the credits granted by banks to the sector and the of the real sector in the period 2013M01-2025M03 in Türkiye. In the study, the credits granted by the banks were analyzed separately with respect to the capital kinds of the banks (public, domestic, private, and foreign). Turnover index data from the industry, services, trade, and construction sectors were used to represent the real sector. In this context, twelve different models were developed in which the real sector variables were dependent, and bank credits were independent and subjected to the Engle-Granger test (1987). While the cointegration relationship between the variables could not be established using the Engle-Granger (1987) test, the Granger & Yoon (2002) test revealed asymmetric relationships between the variables. As a result, the existence of long-term hidden cointegration relationships between the performance of the real sector and the credits provided to the sector by different types of banks, separated by their capital types, was found.
