Engagement in Foreign Language Class: The Case of Kastamonu University

Abstract

This study aims to examine the emotional, cognitive, and social engagement of university students taking foreign language courses, since it is essential for the effective functioning and development of the education and teaching process. The study group consisted of university students taking foreign language courses in the faculties located in Kastamonu University Central Campus, and the study employed a survey model as the research model. "Foreign Language Course Engagement Scale" was used to collect the data, and 455 students participated in the study. factor, variance, and correlation analyses with the collected data were performed to assess the variables. The data analysis showed that students' emotional, cognitive, and social engagement in the foreign language course was high, and emotional engagement was higher than the other sub-dimensions. According to the findings, students' engagement in foreign language courses differed according to gender, class, duration of taking foreign language courses, nationality, faculty, and perceived achievement, but not the perceived teaching method. The study offers a series of suggestions and recommendations based on the results.

Yabancı Dil Dersine Katılım: Kastamonu Üniversitesi Örneği

Abstract

Eğitim-öğretim sürecinin sağlıklı işleyişi ve geliştirilmesi açısından önem teşkil etmesi nedeniyle bu çalışmada, yabancı dil dersi gören üniversite öğrencilerinin derse duyuşsal, bilişsel ve sosyal katılımlarının incelenmesi amaçlanmıştır. Araştırmanın çalışma grubunu Kastamonu Üniversitesi Merkez kampüsünde yer alan fakültelerde yabancı dil dersi gören üniversite öğrencileri oluşturmuş, araştırma modeli olarak ise tarama modeli kullanılmıştır. Verilerin toplanması için “Yabancı Dil Dersi Katılım Ölçeği” kullanılmış ve çalışmaya 455 öğrenci katılmıştır. Elde edilen verilerle değişkenleri ölçmek amacıyla gerekli faktör, varyans ve korelasyon analizleri yapılmıştır. Verilerin analizinden elde edilen öğrenci katılımına ilişkin sonuçlar, öğrencilerin yabancı dil dersine duyuşsal, bilişsel ve sosyal katılımlarının yüksek, duyuşsal katılımlarının diğer alt boyutlara göre daha yüksek olduğunu göstermiştir. Elde edilen bulgulara göre ayrıca öğrencilerin yabancı dil dersine katılımlarının cinsiyet, sınıf, yabancı dil dersi alma süresi, uyruk, fakülte ve algılanan başarıya göre farklılaştığı, algılanan öğretim yöntemine göre ise farklılaşmadığı tespit edilmiştir. Bu sonuçlara dayanarak, bir dizi öneri ve tavsiyede bulunulmuştur.
