Emotions and Masculinity: The Gendering of Emotions in Turkish Society

Abstract

Emotions are not merely individual experiences; rather, they are structures shaped by cultural codes and guided by social norms. In this context, the manner in which emotions are expressed is subject to regulation in accordance with gender roles, with different emotional repertoires being attributed to men and women. The concept of masculinity has traditionally been characterized by a notion of strength and self-control, often involving the suppression of emotions. Concurrently, emotions such as vulnerability or sensitivity have been excluded from this construct. This phenomenon is significant not only on an individual level but also in the context of gender assumptions propagated during the process of reproduction. The present study analyzes the ruptures in perceptions of masculinity by focusing on the effects of dynamics such as social transformation, neoliberal economic policies, and new forms of fatherhood on the expression of emotions. The present study endeavors to address the manner in which emotions are constructed in the context of gender and how they are evaluated in relation to masculine identity. Its theoretical underpinnings are drawn from the works of Michel Foucault, R. W. Connell, and Arlie Hochschild. Emotions are not only an individual phenomenon but also a social and cultural construct that serves as a source of power. In this regard, emotions can be conceptualized as a domain of cultural and political influence, wherein social mores are perpetuated and individuals are positioned based on gender, class, and identity.

Duygular ve Erkeklik: Türk Toplumunda Duyguların Cinsiyetlendirilmesi

Abstract

Duygular, bireysel tecrübelerden ibaret olmayan, kültürel kodlarla şekillendirilen ve toplumsal normlarla yönlendirilen yapılardır. Bu bağlamda, duyguların ifade ediliş biçimleri toplumsal cinsiyet rolleri doğrultusunda düzenlenmekte; kadınlara ve erkeklere farklı duygusal repertuarlar atfedilmektedir. Erkeklik kimliği tarihsel süreçte duygularını bastıran, güçlü duran ve kendine hâkim olan bir duruşla birlikte tanımlanmakta kırılganlık veya hassasiyet gibi duygular ise bu kimliğin dışında tutulmaktadır. İlgili durum, sadece bireysel düzeyde değil, toplumsal cinsiyet kabullerinin yeniden üretim sürecinde de önem arz etmektedir. Çalışma, toplumsal dönüşüm, neoliberal ekonomi ve yeni babalık gibi dinamiklerin duyguların ifadesi üzerindeki etkilerine odaklanarak, erkeklik algılarında meydana gelen kırılmaları analiz etmektedir. Duyguların toplumsal cinsiyet bağlamında nasıl yapılandığını ve erkeklik kimliğiyle nasıl bir ortak paydada değerlendirildiğini ele almayı amaçlayan bu çalışma, Michel Foucault, R. W. Connell ve Arlie Hochschild’in teorik yaklaşımlarıyla temellendirilmiştir. Duyguların, sadece bireysel değil aynı zamanda toplumsal ve kültürel bir iktidar alanı olduğu görülürken, bu yönüyle hem toplumsal normların yeniden üretildiği hem de bireylerin cinsiyet, sınıf ve kimlik temelinde konumlandırıldığı kültürel ve politik bir iktidar alanı olarak değerlendirilmesi gerektiği söylenebilmektedir.
