Representation of Interpreting in Translator & Interpreter Education: Turkish Sampling

Abstract

The adventure of translator education in Türkiye, which started in the last quarter of the 20th century, continues unabated with the participation of new universities, departments and programs. In Türkiye, which has a translation education experience of nearly 40 years, translator & interpreter education is provided under different names and faculties, and young translators are trained for different specialization areas of the translation sector. An investi gation of the curricula of translator education programs conducted in different foreign languages in Türkiye reveals that while many courses in various fields of expertise are offered to train qualified professionals for the translation sector, both as translators and interpreters, most of these courses primarily aim to improve written translation skills. The main purpose of the present study is to examine the curricula of the translation and interpreting programs in Türkiye in terms of the representation of interpreting and determine the situation in interpreter training. The research was designed in a single screening model, one of the general screening types. In this context, based on YÖK ATLAS (2024), the programs actively providing translator education in Türkiye were identified and then the curricula of the fouryear translation and interpreting or translation studies undergraduate programs announced on their websites were examined. By examining the curriculum contents, courses directly related to interpreting in terms of theory or practice were included in the scope of the research. In this respect, the courses in the field of interpreting were determined, the status of these courses as compulsory or elective courses and the semesters in which these courses are usually taught were revealed. In addition, it was also investigated whether the interpreting courses in translator education programs were courses for general interpreting skills or the courses that address different areas of specialization in the field of interpreting. This study is expected to provide insights for researchers focusing on interpreting education in Türkiye from a pedagogical perspective.

Sözlü Çeviri Alanının Çeviri Eğitiminde Temsili: Türkiye Örneklemi

Abstract

Türkiye’de 20. yüzyılın son çeyreğinde başlayan çeviri eğitimi serüveni alana yeni üniversitelerin, bölümlerin ve programların katılımı ile hız kesmeden devam etmektedir. Yaklaşık 40 yıllık bir çeviri eğitimi tecrübesi olan Türkiye’de, farklı isim ve fakülteler altında çeviri eğitimi verilmekte ve çeviri sektörünün farklı uzmanlık alanlarına genç çevirmeler yetiştirilmektedir. Türkiye’de farklı yabancı dillerde çeviri eğitimi veren programların müfredatları incelendiğinde, genel olarak yazılı çeviri edincini geliştirmeye yönelik derslerin çoğunlukta olması gerçeği ile birlikte, gerek yazılı çevirmen (mütercim) gerekse sözlü çevirmen (tercüman) olarak çeviri sektöründe faaliyet gösterecek olan nitelikli insan gücünü ortaya çıkaracak farklı uzmanlık alanlarındaki birçok dersin okutulduğu görülmektedir. Bu çalışmanın amacı Türkiye’de faaliyet gösteren mütercim ve tercümanlık/çeviribilim lisans programlarının müfredatlarını sözlü çeviri alanının temsiliyeti açısından incelemek ve sözlü çeviri eğitimindeki durumu saptamaktadır. Araştırma genel tarama türlerinden tekil tarama modelinde tasarlanmıştır. Veriler YÖK ATLAS (2024) temel alınarak Türkiye genelinde aktif olarak çeviri eğitimi veren mütercim ve tercümanlık/ çeviribilim bölümlerinin müfredatlarından doküman inceleme yöntemiyle elde edilmiştir. Müfredat içerikleri incelenerek kuram ya da uygulama açısından doğrudan sözlü çeviri ile ilgili olan dersler araştırma kapsamına alınmıştır. Bu derslerin zorunlu ya da seçmeli dersler kategorisinde bulunma durumları ve bu derslerin genelde hangi yarıyıllarda okutulduğu ortaya konulmuştur. Ayrıca çeviri eğitimi veren programlarda yer alan sözlü çeviri derslerinin genel sözlü çeviri becerilerine yönelik dersler mi olduğu yoksa sözlü çeviri alanının farklı uzmanlık sahalarına hitap eden dersler mi olduğu mercek altına alınmıştır. Çalışmanın Türkiye’deki sözlü çeviri eğitimi alanında pedagojik açıdan alanı incelemeye çalışan araştırmacılara yol göstereceği düşünülmektedir.
