An Investigation into University Students’ Seafood Consumption Preferences: A Case Study of Recep Tayyip Erdoğan University

Abstract

This study aims to examine the seafood consumption habits of students at Recep Tayyip Erdoğan University. Through a structured questionnaire, data were collected on students’ access to seafood, frequency of consumption, preferred fish species, and purchasing behaviors. The findings reveal that 92.9% of the participants consume seafood; however, the frequency is generally limited to only a few times per year, with regular weekly consumption reported by just 9% of the respondents. Specifically, 38.4% consume fish a few times per year, 25.5% once a month, and 14.5% every two weeks. Anchovy emerged as the most preferred fish species, and freshness was identified as the most influential factor in purchasing decisions. Regional differences, housing conditions, and access to seafood were found to significantly affect consumption patterns. A considerable proportion of students do not consider their seafood intake sufficient or remain uncertain about it. Additionally, 64.6% of the participants disagreed with the idea that dietary supplements such as Omega-3 could be preferred over seafood, while only 15.5% supported this view. The results underscore the need to raise awareness among young individuals and to improve access to seafood in order to enhance consumption behaviors. This study contributes original insights into the dietary habits of university students and highlights the role of regional and socioeconomic factors in shaping seafood consumption, thus offering a valuable perspective for future nutritional interventions and public health strategies targeting the youth population.
