Coenzyme Q10 Supplementation in Cardiovascular Diseases: Molecular Mechanisms and Clinical Evidence

Year 2025, Volume: 7 Issue: 2, 423 - 443, 25.08.2025

Abstract

Coenzyme Q10 (CoQ10) is a vitamin-like, lipophilic, redox-active molecule found naturally in all cell membranes, and it can be synthesized endogenously in all tissues. Its primary function is to support energy production by participating in the mitochondrial electron transport chain. Another well-known function of this molecule, which has many biochemical roles in the body, is its potent antioxidant properties, which protect against oxidative damage caused by reactive oxygen species. CoQ10 is abundant in tissues that require high energy, such as the heart muscle, and is considered a crucial component for maintaining heart health. Scientific studies suggest that CoQ10 supplementation may have beneficial effects in managing cardiovascular diseases, such as heart failure, coronary artery disease, hypertension, myocardial infarction, and dyslipidemia, where mitochondrial dysfunction and oxidative stress play a significant role in their pathogenesis. Recognized as a generally safe dietary supplement and one of the most widely used on the market, CoQ10 is considered a potential nutraceutical for supporting cardiovascular function and alleviating related symptoms.

Kardiyovasküler Hastalıklarda Koenzim Q10 Takviyesi: Moleküler Mekanizmalar ve Klinik Bulgular

Year 2025, Volume: 7 Issue: 2, 423 - 443, 25.08.2025
