The Illusion of Reality: From The Truman Show to Social Media-The New Prisoners of Consumer Society

Abstract

Since its emergence, capitalism has functioned not only as an economic formation but also as a political and ideological order. What is distinctive today is that these effects have become more visible and data-driven within digital environments. The dynamics of the consumer society ensure that individuals are positioned not only as consumers but also as marketing objects. In this context, cinema stands out as a critical tool that makes visible the effects of the capitalist system on individuals. This study semiotically analyzes the effects of the capitalist system on individuals and the functioning mechanisms of the consumer society through Peter Weir’s The Truman Show (1998) within the framework of Peirce’s triple sign model and Barthes’s semiotic framework. The study analyzes the semiotic codes of the film and examines the control mechanisms of the capitalist order on the individual. In the film, the artificial world in which Truman lives is constructed as a symbolic model of the modern consumer society and a critical narrative is presented about the position of the individual within the system. Truman’s process of awareness allows the individual to question the concepts of freedom and reality and offers a criticism of the invisible limits of today’s consumer society. The main research problem of the study is to reveal how the voluntary participation of today’s individuals in surveillance and consumption mechanisms is represented in the movie. The findings show that today’s individuals live in a system like Truman; however, today, individuals voluntarily turn into marketing objects. Today’s digital content producers are active participants in the system by turning their own lives into commodities through social media and digital platforms. In this context, The Truman Show is not only a work of cinema, but also a critical narrative that discusses the impact of the capitalist order on the individual and the invisible boundaries of modern consumer culture.
