Scope and Language
Journal of Smart Systems (JOSS) is an international, peer-reviewed, scholarly, and open-access journal that publishes original scientific studies in Turkish and English in the fields of smart systems and engineering applications integrated with these systems.
The journal is published electronically twice a year, in June and December. Manuscript submissions are accepted throughout the year. Publication scheduling is determined according to the date on which the peer-review and editorial evaluation processes are completed.
The journal considers research articles and review articles for publication. Manuscripts submitted for publication in the journal must be prepared in accordance with the author guidelines, ethical principles, and other publication requirements specified below.
Author Guidelines
Manuscripts submitted to the journal must be original, must not have been previously published, and must not be under consideration by another journal. All authors of the manuscript are deemed to have approved the content of the manuscript and its submission to the journal.
Manuscripts may be prepared in Turkish or English.
Full-text papers presented at scientific meetings and studies derived from postgraduate theses may be considered for publication provided that this information is clearly stated in the manuscript.
Manuscripts submitted to the journal must be prepared in accordance with the author guidelines using the Journal of Smart Systems Turkish Article Template or the Journal of Smart Systems English Article Template. Manuscripts not prepared in accordance with the template or author guidelines may be returned to the author without being considered for evaluation. In the preparation of manuscripts and the use of punctuation marks, except for field-specific scientific and technical conventions, the Turkish Language Association (TDK) Spelling Guide shall be followed. Excluding the abstract, English abstract, and extended abstract sections, manuscripts are limited to a maximum of 10,000 words or 30 pages. Manuscripts exceeding this limit will be returned to the author with a request for shortening.
The manuscript title should clearly and accurately reflect the content of the study and indicate the main subject of the research. The abstract should concisely reflect the main sections of the manuscript and the aim, method, principal findings, and conclusion of the study, and should provide readers with sufficient information about the content of the manuscript.
Manuscript File
Journal of Smart Systems (JOSS) applies a double-blind peer-review system. Therefore, the manuscript file uploaded to the system for evaluation must not contain any information that could reveal the identity of the authors.
The manuscript file must not include:
Author name and surname,
Academic title,
Institutional and departmental information,
Email address,
ORCID information,
Acknowledgements or any other information that may directly reveal the identity of the author.
Author information must be entered completely in the relevant fields of the DergiPark manuscript submission system. For multi-authored manuscripts, the other authors must also be added to the submission by using the “Add Author” option available at the manuscript upload stage.
For manuscripts accepted for publication, the author name(s), institutional information, email addresses, ORCID information, and other required information are added to the manuscript at the final stage of the publication process.
Manuscript Submission
Manuscript submissions are made exclusively through the DergiPark system.
During submission, the manuscript file and all forms and documents required by the journal must be uploaded to the system in full.
Authors are responsible for ensuring that the contact and author information they enter into the DergiPark system during submission is accurate and up to date.
After manuscript submission, authors may not be added or removed, nor may the order of authors be changed, without the written consent of all authors. Such requests may be considered only with the written consent of all authors and the approval of the Editorial Office.
Evaluation Process
The manuscript evaluation process takes an average of 8–10 weeks. The evaluation process for manuscripts submitted to the journal is conducted on the basis of editorial preliminary review and double-blind peer review.
Manuscripts submitted to the journal are first subjected to a preliminary review by the Editorial Office in terms of:
Compliance with the journal’s aims and scope,
Compliance with the author guidelines,
Scientific quality and originality,
Presence of ethical declarations,
Similarity rate,
Citation and reference format,
File upload requirements.
Manuscripts that pass the preliminary review are sent to at least two independent reviewers who are experts in the relevant field, taking into consideration the reviewer pool in the DergiPark system. Where necessary, the opinion of a third reviewer may be sought.
Under the double-blind peer-review system, the identities of the authors are not disclosed to the reviewers, and the identities of the reviewers are not disclosed to the authors.
If revisions are requested in the reviewer reports, the manuscript is returned to the author. The author must make the revisions requested by the reviewers and the Editorial Office and upload the revised version of the manuscript to the system within the specified period.
If one reviewer provides a positive opinion and the other provides a negative opinion, the manuscript may be sent to a third reviewer, or the final decision may be made by the Editorial Office by taking into account the scientific justification provided in the reviewer reports.
The Editorial Office has the authority to make the final evaluation and publication decision regarding manuscripts deemed suitable for publication based on the reviewer reports.
Manuscripts that do not comply with the author guidelines, ethical principles, or publication requirements of the journal may be rejected by the Editorial Office or returned to the author for the necessary revisions, irrespective of the reviewer evaluation reports.
Communication and Process Tracking via DergiPark
Notifications concerning procedures carried out during the evaluation process of manuscripts submitted to Journal of Smart Systems (JOSS) are communicated to authors through the DergiPark system.
Some automatic notifications sent by DergiPark may be blocked by authors’ email servers or directed to the junk/spam folder. This may result in reviewer reports, revision requests, or editorial notifications not being seen in a timely manner and may prolong the evaluation process.
Therefore, authors are advised not to rely solely on email notifications and to regularly monitor the evaluation process through the DergiPark system.
Copyright and License
For manuscripts accepted for publication, the Copyright and Publication Agreement Form must be signed by all authors and uploaded to the system. Manuscripts for which the relevant form has not been uploaded to the system will not be published.
Authors retain the copyright to their works published in the journal. By submitting their manuscripts to Journal of Smart Systems (JOSS), authors grant the journal the right of first publication and a non-exclusive right to publish, archive, index, and distribute the published version in accordance with open-access principles.
Articles published in the journal are licensed under the Creative Commons Attribution-NonCommercial 4.0 International License — CC BY-NC 4.0. This license permits the work to be used, shared, and adapted for non-commercial purposes, provided that appropriate credit is given to the original author(s) and the source in which the work was first published.
After manuscript submission, authors may not be added or removed, nor may the order of authors be changed, without the written consent of all authors.
Declarations
The following declarations must be included at the end of the manuscript, before the reference list:
Statement of authors’ contribution rates,
Funding and acknowledgement statement, where applicable,
Conflict of interest statement,
Ethics committee approval statement or a statement indicating that ethics committee approval was not required,
Statement regarding the scope of use where an artificial intelligence tool has been used.
If the manuscript has been derived from a master’s/doctoral thesis belonging to one of the authors or prepared under the supervision of one or more of the authors, this must be clearly stated following the abstract section provided in the manuscript template.
Example statement:
This article is derived from the master’s/doctoral thesis of ……… titled “…………………………………………………..”.
Fee Policy
No fees are charged to authors or their institutions for manuscripts submitted to or accepted for publication in the journal.
The journal does not charge submission fees, editorial processing fees, peer-review fees, article processing charges/APCs, page charges, color figure charges, DOI fees, language editing fees, publication fees, withdrawal fees, or any other fees.
Ethics Committee Approval and Permissions
Authors are responsible for obtaining the relevant approvals for studies requiring ethics committee approval, legal permission, or special permission.
For studies requiring ethics committee approval, the relevant Ethics Committee Approval Document must be uploaded to the system together with the manuscript submission files.
For studies requiring ethics committee approval, the following information must be clearly stated in the manuscript:
Name of the ethics committee,
Date of the decision/approval,
Decision or approval number.
For studies that do not require ethics committee approval, this must also be clearly stated in the manuscript.
Research requiring ethics committee approval includes the following:
Qualitative or quantitative research requiring data to be collected from participants through surveys, interviews, focus group studies, observation, experiments, interviews, or similar techniques,
Research involving the use of humans or animals, including materials and data, for experimental or other scientific purposes,
Clinical research conducted on humans,
Research conducted on animals,
Retrospective studies falling within the scope of legislation concerning the protection of personal data.
In addition:
For case reports, informed consent must have been obtained, and this must be stated in the manuscript.
Where scales, questionnaires, photographs, images, tables, figures, or similar materials belonging to others are used, the necessary permissions must be obtained.
Applicable copyright regulations must be observed with respect to the intellectual and artistic works used.
Footnotes and References
All manuscripts must be prepared by reviewing the manuscript template and in accordance with the formatting rules specified in the template.
Self-citations should be avoided; only sources directly related to the theoretical framework, methodology, findings, and discussion of the study should be included. All references must be arranged in accordance with the preferred reference management style and applied consistently throughout the manuscript.
The journal adopts APA 7 style for citation and referencing. In-text citations and the reference list must be prepared in accordance with APA 7 rules. Basic information on APA 7 is available in the relevant guide:

Authors may also consult the publication entitled APA 7 Writing Rules and Referencing, prepared by the Turkish Librarians’ Association, for guidance on writing rules.
At least 30% of the references included in the manuscript must consist of current references published within the last five years.
Reference List: The reference list must be numbered according to the order in which the references are used in the text. Journal titles must be abbreviated as indicated on the following web page:
