A Guide for Book Reviews

Book Review Guideline

Book review is a critical evaluation of the book in question with regards to its theses, structure, and style that places the text within the context of scholarly literature. Being a form of academic writing, it is not a summary or advertisement of the book. The review is required to include assessments and arguments regarding the importance and value of the book, its contribution to the literature, its strengths, and weaknesses by a scholar of the respective field.

Books.jpgThe book review guidelines of the Journal of Kadim are as follows:
• Only academic book reviews which are published in the last five years will be accepted.
• The book review must contain the publication data above the main text, including the name of the author, title of the book, publisher information (city, name of publisher, date of publication), page count, price, and ISBN.
• The review is expected to be between 1500-2000 words.  (The ones exceeding this limit are considered for publication by the editorial board.) It should have a Turkish and an English abstract at the beginning, both consisting of 60-90 words with 5 keywords each.

• The review should not be a mere summary but a comprehensive commentary contextualizing the book from several aspects.
• The review should be objective. The non-academic arguments and statements about the book or its author should be avoided.
• The competency and expertise of the author should be emphasized.
• The genre and subject of the book, its main ideas, and major objectives, and how effectively these are accomplished should be included.
• The intended audience for the book should be specified.
• The author's thesis, its originality, and the arguments used to support the thesis should be discussed.
• The soundness, accuracy, and thoroughness of the scholarship should be evaluated.
• The effectiveness of the writing style and organization of the book should be evaluated.
• Constructive comments about the strength and weaknesses of the book should be included.
• The book's contribution to the new research and future studies should be evaluated.
• The effectiveness of the charts, maps, illustrations, the index, and their overall contribution to the book should be included.
• The coherence and clarity of the translation may be evaluated if relevant.
