Dr Karla Breen Rickerby is a Nurse Consultant, researcher, and educator with expertise in primary health care, aged care, nursing education, Indigenous health, and cultural safety. My research programme examines culturally safe and equitable nursing practice, with particular interests in Māori and Indigenous health, nursing workforce development, transition to practice, clinical education, and resilience within health systems. I have published research on cultural safety in surgical pathways, family-centred diabetes care, nursing mentorship, graduate nurse transition following COVID-19, primary health student placements, and therapeutic nursing interventions. My recent work includes systematic reviews examining culturally grounded resilience in aged residential care and equity-focused approaches to nursing practice. I am committed to translating research into practice to strengthen culturally responsive care, improve nursing education, and advance health equity.

Alongside my nursing scholarship, I maintain an active interest in archaeology, heritage studies, and local history. My publications explore themes of landscape, memory, embodiment, and community heritage, with work appearing in archaeological and local history journals and heritage publications. I have also contributed to heritage interpretation projects, including the development of walking trails and digital heritage resources in New Zealand and Ireland. This interdisciplinary perspective informs my broader interest in place, identity, and the relationships between people, culture, and wellbeing.

I am a registered nurse, lecturer, and educator with extensive clinical and academic experience in respiratory nursing, non-invasive ventilation, and medical simulation. My professional career has combined advanced clinical practice with teaching and healthcare education in both the United Kingdom and Poland.

In 2009, I joined Basildon and Thurrock University Hospital NHS Foundation Trust in the United Kingdom, where I worked in the Respiratory and Respiratory High Dependency Unit. During this time, I specialized in the assessment and management of patients with respiratory failure, including arterial blood gas analysis and the initiation and management of non-invasive ventilation (NIV) and continuous positive airway pressure (CPAP). After obtaining specialist qualifications in non-invasive ventilation, I became responsible for educating nurses and junior doctors in NIV management and advanced respiratory care.

Alongside my clinical responsibilities, I developed a strong interest in medical education. I supervised nursing students, junior doctors, and healthcare professionals, delivering both theoretical and practical training in respiratory nursing. In 2014, I completed a postgraduate Mentorship Course at Anglia Ruskin University, which enabled me to further develop my teaching skills. As a ward manager, I was responsible for the continuous professional development of nursing and support staff in accordance with the standards of the Nursing and Midwifery Council (NMC). I also served as a Tissue Viability Specialist Nurse, providing education on pressure injury prevention and participating in quality improvement initiatives through root cause analysis of clinical incidents.

In recognition of my contribution to clinical education, I received an award from the Faculty of Health, Social Care and Education at Anglia Ruskin University in 2015 for excellence in student teaching.

In 2017, I expanded my expertise by working as a specialist nurse in sleep medicine and home ventilation, independently assessing patients with sleep-disordered breathing, initiating CPAP and NIV therapy, and providing comprehensive patient education. Since 2018, I have worked as a Respiratory Clinical Nurse Specialist (Band 7), delivering specialist care for patients with chronic respiratory diseases in accordance with NICE, British Thoracic Society (BTS), and GOLD guidelines. Throughout my clinical career in the United Kingdom, I delivered both patient care and professional education entirely in English.

Since 2019, I have been a lecturer at Jan Kochanowski University in Kielce, Poland, where I teach undergraduate nursing students. My academic interests include respiratory nursing, physical assessment, therapeutic patient education, simulation-based learning, and the development of clinical competencies through high-fidelity medical simulation.

Throughout my career, I have completed numerous postgraduate and specialist training programmes, including certification in diagnostic spirometry according to ARTP/BTS standards, postgraduate respiratory nursing, Immediate Life Support (ILS), asthma and COPD management, physical assessment for nurses, mechanical ventilation nursing, healthcare management (Pre-MBA), OSCE examiner training, and advanced medical simulation instructor training.

My professional interests focus on respiratory nursing, non-invasive ventilation, pulmonary diagnostics, evidence-based nursing practice, patient education, medical simulation, and the education of future healthcare professionals.
