On Nussbaum’s Concept of Objectification

Abstract

On philosophical grounds, the concept of objectification has been handled and explained on the basis of the moral problem of a person treating another as instruments for her own goals and interests or attributing instrumental value to a person. In this context, from Kant to the present day, what objectification and instrumentalization are and under what conditions they constitute a moral problem have been questions that many philosophers sought answers to. On the other hand, contemporary approaches brought a different perspective to the notion of objectification, the relation of inter-individual domination and to the situation where an individual is treated as a “thing” and “turned into an object or objectified”. Especially contemporary feminist theories define the concept of objectification on the basis of the domination of man as an objectifying individual, over woman as an objectified individual. This situation is explained as both morally wrong and psychologically, socially and culturally harmful to the existence of woman. In her article Objectification (1995), Martha Nussbaum presents an inclusive concept of objectification by defining seven different forms of objectification. Nussbaum’s approach that is seen different and controversial is handled within the framework of the notion sexual objectification and is frequently discussed by feminist theories. In this contenxt, the moral dimension of objectification of woman and explaining this dimension through comparing it with Nussbaum’s forms of objectification presents an important conceptual ground and contribution to this discussion. The aim of this paper is to address the concept of objectification and forms of objectification as a philosophical problem in both moral and feminist contexts and to evaluate and discuss the place and importance Nussbaum’s approach.

Nussbaum’un Nesneleştirme Kavramı Üzerine

Abstract

Felsefi zeminde nesneleştirme kavramı bir insanın kendi amaç ve çıkarları için başka bir insanı araç edinmesi ya da bir insana araçsal değer atfedilmesi şeklindeki ahlaki probleme dayanarak ele alınmış ve açıklanmıştır. Bu bağlamda, nesneleştirmenin ve araçsallaştırmanın ne olduğu ve hangi koşullarda ahlaki bir problem teşkil ettiği soruları Kant’dan günümüze pek çok düşünürün cevap aradığı sorular olmuştur. Öte yandan, çağdaş yaklaşımlar, nesneleştirme kavramı ile bireylerarası tahakküm ilişkisine ve bir bireyin başka bir birey tarafından “bir şey” olarak ele alınıp “nesneye dönüştürülmesi ya da nesneleştirilmesi” durumuna farklı bir bakış açısı getirmişlerdir. Özellikle çağdaş feminist teoriler, nesneleştirme kavramını nesneleştirici bir birey olarak erkeğin nesneleştirilen bir birey olarak kadın üzerindeki tahakkümü zemininde tanımlarlar. Bu durum hem ahlaki bağlamda yanlış hem de psikolojik, sosyal ve kültürel açıdan kadının varlığına zarar veren bir durum olarak açıklanmaktadır. Martha Nussbaum, Nesneleştirme (1995 – Objectification) adlı makalesinde, yedi ayrı tür nesneleştirme biçimi tanımlayarak kapsayıcı bir nesneleştirme kavramı sunmuştur. Nussbaum’un farklı ve tartışmalı kabul edilen bu yaklaşımı, feminist teoriler tarafından cinsel nesneleştirme kavramı çerçevesinde ele alınmış ve sıklıkla tartışılmıştır. Bu bağlamda, kadının nesneleştirilmesinin ahlaki boyutu ve bu boyutun Nussbaum’un nesneleştirme biçimleri ile karşılaştırılarak açıklanması önemli bir kavramsal zemin sunmakta ve bu tartışmaya katkı sağlamaktadır. Bu çalışmanın amacı da nesneleştirme kavramını ve nesneleştirme türlerini hem ahlaki hem de feminist bağlamda felsefi bir problem olarak ele almak ve Nussbaum’un yaklaşımının yerini ve önemini değerlendirmek ve tartışmaktır.
