Recognition of Textile Fibers and Awareness of Sustainability: The Case of the Thrace Region

Abstract

Fiber content shapes consumer preferences, and interest in natural, recyclable and sustainable fibers has grown in recent years. When choosing products, today's consumers weigh fiber content and environmental impact alongside design and price. The environmental problems of fast fashion have also increased interest in alternatives such as second-hand clothing, clothing rental and recycled products. This study assesses how well consumers recognize textile fibers and how aware they are of sustainability. The survey was conducted with 760 participants living in the Thrace Region of Türkiye (Tekirdağ, Edirne and Kırklareli). Most participants reported paying attention to fiber content and preferring natural, sustainable materials. The best-known fibers were cotton, wool, linen, polyester, cashmere, bamboo, elastane (Lycra), mohair and polyamide; the least known were modal, lyocell, acetate and triacetate. For 86% of participants, comfort mattered more than fashionability when choosing clothes. Women were more aware of fiber content, and age and occupational sector also influenced preferences. Although most participants were unfamiliar with the concept of sustainability, 82% were willing to pay more for sustainable products. Sustainable consumption practices such as buying second-hand clothing or renting clothes, however, have not yet become widespread. This study was supported by the Kırklareli University Scientific Research Projects Coordination Unit under project number KLUBAP-280, titled "Consumer Awareness of Textile Fibers.
