Towards a Sustainable Future: Assessing Bristol's Urban Development

Abstract

This study examines Bristol’s sustainability performance through selected Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), focusing on SDG 3 (health and well-being), SDG 11 (sustainable cities and communities), and SDG 13 (climate action). It aims to assess the extent of local sustainability progress over time and to identify the main areas in which structural inequalities remain visible. Methodologically, the study draws on repeated cross-sectional survey evidence from the Bristol Quality of Life (BQL) surveys conducted between 2015 and 2023 and interprets these data through an SDG-based analytical framework. The findings indicate measurable progress in residents’ access to green space, climate-related awareness, and perceived air quality, reflecting Bristol’s continued policy commitment to sustainable urban development. At the same time, persistent structural constraints remain evident, particularly in housing affordability, the reliability of public transport, and uneven local environmental conditions, including street-level pollution. These results suggest that sustainability gains are distributed unevenly across communities. The study concludes that reducing these disparities requires more inclusive, community-led policy design and more integrated planning and governance approaches, while contributing to urban sustainability research through the repeated cross-sectional use of perception-based local data.
