Türkiye’de Gerçekleşen Askeri Müdahalelerin İngiliz ve Amerikan Basınına Yansımaları

Abstract

Türkiye’de çok partili hayatın başlamasından itibaren gerçekleşen askeri müdahaleler Türk demokrasi tarihi üzerinde silinmez birer leke olmuştur. Müdahalelerin her biri birbirinden farklı yöntemler izlemesine rağmen benzer sonuçlar doğurmuştur. Türkiye’nin uluslararası saygınlığının azalması, Türk halkının iradesinin yerini askerlerin diktalarının alması ve halkın eşitliğe, adalete olan inancının zedelenmesi bu sonuçlardan en göze çarpanlardır. Bu makale Türkiye’de gerçekleşen askeri müdahalelere İngiliz ve Amerikan basınının yaklaşımını incelemektedir. Cumhuriyet döneminde gerçekleşen 27 Mayıs 1960, 12 Mart 1971, 12 Eylül 1980 ve 28 Şubat 1997 askeri müdahalelerine dönemin gazeteleri irdelenerek bir “dış bakış” sağlanmaya çalışılmıştır. Bu amaçla öncelikle darbelerin gerçekleşme süreçleri temel hatlarıyla ortaya konmuş, ardından müdahalelerin öncesinde ve sonrasında İngiliz-Amerikan gazetelerinde yer alan haberler incelenerek darbelerin dış basında yansımaları ortaya konmuştur. Türkiye’de gerçekleşen askeri müdahalelerin hepsinde İngiliz ve Amerikan basınının darbecilerin yanında yer aldığı, mevcut yönetimi, işlemez, despot, gerici olarak nitelediği görülmüştür. Ayrıca, basında yer alan haberlerde darbeler olumlu bir gelişme olarak gösterilip, eleştiri yapılmazken, devrilen yönetimleri itibarsızlaştıracak makaleler de yazılmıştır. İkinci Dünya Savaşı öncesinde İngiltere, sonrasında ise ABD ile sıkı müttefik olan Türkiye’de, seçilmiş hükümetlerin askeri müdahaleler ile devrilmesi karşısında, liberal demokrasinin dünyadaki en önemli savunucusu olan İngiliz ve Amerikan basının olumlu tutumu dikkat çekicidir.

Military Interventions In Turkey And Its Reflections In The British-American Press

Abstract

Military interventions that have occurred since the beginning of multi-party period in Turkey has been a dark stain on the history of Turkish democracy. Although each of the interventions followed different methods, they produced similar results. The reduction of Turkey's international prestige, replacement of the will of the Turkish people with military dictatorship, damage to people's trust in equality, and justice are the most obvious results. This article examines the perspective of the British- American press to the military interventions in Turkey. Military interventions on May 27, 1960, on March 12, 1971, on September 12, 1980 and on February 28, 1997 were examined through the newspapers to provide an “external view” to the military interventions occurred in the republican period. For this purpose, first of all, the courses of the coups were explained with their key features, and then the news that took place in newspapers regarding interventions were examined. It is seen that all of the military interventions in Turkey were supported by Anglo-American press and the overthrown governments were described as ineffective, despot and reactionary. In addition, while the coups were shown as a positive development in the press, overthrown administrations were discredited. Turkey was a close ally of Britain before World War II, and became ally of USA after the war; however, the press of two distinguished defenders of liberal democracy took a positive attitude towards the military interventions in Turkey.
