Analysis of Senior Karate Kumite Final Competitions Between 2010-2024

Abstract

The aim of this study is to analyze the final competitions of senior karate kumite competitions between 2010 and 2024. In this study, a total of 70 final competitions of the World Senior Karate Championships, which is the biggest event of Shotokan Karate held every two years, were observed between 2010-2024. The data used in this study were obtained from TKF, WKF official website and WKF official YouTube channel. The techniques that brought points and the penalties taken in the important competitions of karate were noted separately. In the kumite final competitions of the karate world championships held between 2010-2024, hand techniques (69%) scored more points than foot techniques (31%). Among the hand techniques, the yyaku tsuki technique received the most points compared to other hand techniques. When the score and penalty status of the techniques were observed; 92% of the techniques were found to be score and 8% penalty. It can be interpreted that the techniques have a minimum level of contact. This study was aimed to comply with all Olympic ideals during its journey on the “Olympic Road” in 2012 and the effort applied seems to be the evolution of Karate sport. As a result of this study, it was observed that the rules of the WKF have improved, developed and sportified the sport of Karate.
