Analysis of Traditional Savur (Mardin) House Ornaments from a Fractal Geometry Perspective: The Case of Abdüllatif Özbek Mansion

Abstract

In architecture, nature-inspired ornamentations have been shaped within a certain mathematical order. In this study, the ornaments of the traditional Abdüllatif Özbek Mansion located in the Savur district of Mardin were analyzed using the fractal geometry method. Fractal geometry is a mathematical approach used to describe structures that involve repetition, self-similarity, and fractional ratios. Just as the complex forms observed in nature can be interpreted through fractal geometry, it is also considered that traditional ornamental elements exhibit fractal characteristics and can be explained through this method. The study examined the fractal properties of the ornamental surfaces in terms of repetition, self-similarity, and fractional dimension. Fractal geometry not only allows the analysis of seemingly irregular forms but also contributes to the scientific evaluation of cultural and artistic heritage. In this context, the study adopts an interdisciplinary approach aimed at understanding the structural and aesthetic systematic underlying traditional craftsmanship in Savur.
