Evaluation of Design Criteria Supporting Ergonomics and Climate Resilience in the Fragmented Transformation of Public Spaces: The Case of Cumhuriyet Square

Abstract

City squares play a vital role in urban life by fostering a sense of community through accessibility and social interaction among all residents. Today, many are being transformed due to limited accessibility, functional and aesthetic weaknesses, poor ergonomics, deterioration, or inability to meet user needs. These transformations aim to make squares more inclusive and accessible for everyone. In the coming years, redesigning squares with a focus on climate resilience is expected to play a key role in achieving the Sustainable Development Goals. This study examined Cumhuriyet Square, which is undergoing a continuous renewal process, through site visits and measurements to evaluate the ergonomic suitability and climate resilience of its redesigned form. Findings indicate that the renovated square exhibits improved ergonomics and climate resilience, although some design deficiencies persist. Recommendations were proposed for future square planning based on ergonomics, climate resilience, and sustainability.
