The Role of Green and Blue Infrastructure in the Production of Social Public Open Spaces: An Introduction to the New Socio-spatial Code for Riverfronts

Abstract

Throughout history, urbanization, rapid population growth and climate change have led to significant physical and ecological transformations in river corridors. This study investigates the role of rivers—as vital components of green and blue infrastructure—in the production of social public spaces, using Chelmsford (UK) as a case study. It explores how river landscapes act as an interface between the built environment and nature while redefining person-place relationships and social connections in urban public spaces. Furthermore, the integration of river corridors into urban open spaces and their significance in the production of social public space are discussed. Highlighting the ecological, social, cultural, and economic benefits of green and blue infrastructure, the study demonstrates that river corridors must be evaluated as multifunctional and integrated systems that require careful spatial planning and design. Finally, socio-spatial code recommendations for urban planning and design processes are presented for future design and planning studies.
